7 Just doesn't look tha appetizing.

Score 9 - I really like the look of well cooked ribs without too much sauce.

Greg MCBJ/KCBS
1/12/2013 11:40:12 pm

score=7 not real attractive, more effort on uniformity

Larry MCBJ
1/13/2013 12:07:53 am

Uneven, ragged cuts and overall lack of effort in this box gets a 7.

six--poor knife cuts, inconsistent rib placement

8 maybe a 9 in person,looks a little dry in the picture.

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ
1/13/2013 12:12:01 am

Score: 7 - Color is good on the first row but uneven on the second, slicing good on the first row but very uneven on the second, placement is okay, pieces are not very uniform overall.

Paul KCBS/CBJ

6 - dry, uneven cuts, and poor placement in box.

7 shapes, sizes and amount of bone showing differ (although i can't really see all of the bone on some ribs in the back). ribs in front appear to have more glaze/shine than ribs in back.

TerryA

7 - the ribs are not the same shape and size. More care needs to be taken when selecting and arranging the box.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
1/13/2013 01:10:29 am

Cuts are uneven and ragged. The color on the front 4 ribs is nice, the back 3 ribs on the right have some pale spots. I'd give this box a 7 maybe an 8.

Dan KCBS CTC,MCBJ
1/13/2013 01:28:29 am

Knife cuts could improve, otherwise going to side with cook,8.

Frank MCBJ
1/13/2013 01:41:36 am

7. Could be the picture but looks a bit on the dry side. Neaten up the slicing - some are a bit ragged.

DickMCBJ/CTC
1/13/2013 01:54:26 am

Score 8. The ribs could be cut better to give the box a more organized appearence and I alway like to see the side of the entry, but these still appear to look like tasty ribs.

Matt KCBS CBJ
1/13/2013 03:57:24 am

6 - Average box. Maybe a 7 in person. Not a clean slice on a couple of pieces. Not placed evenly in the box. Looks a little hurried.

Lorne Rae
1/13/2013 04:26:40 am

a 5. The pieces are of different sizes. Some are overlaid-others not. Knife leaves a few with jagged edges. But color is good and look moist.

7 - the ribs are not cut evenly. The third rib from the left on top, was not cut cleanly. Some of the ribs on the top row look dry. With the amount of bone showing, the other ribs may also be dry. Would have to taste to be sure.

John - KCBS/MMCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MABA Judge

5 - the meat looks dry & unappealing, the slices are haphazardly executed and the box generally looks unfinished.

Tom KCBS MCBJ

I do not know where to begin wrong on so many fronts 5

Denise Sigler link

Looks good but I would not have put the one on the bottom left in the box cut on an angle.

JohnnyY CBJ/NCBS

7 - Would like to have seen a cleaner and more organized presentation. Ribs could have been cut better.

Good color. Not over sacued. Bad knife work. Ragged and uneven cuts. Ribs on back row don't match up......7

Looks good 9

Tina C KCBS CBJ

7, jagged edges and bad cuts and placement . Color is nice though

Good looking ribs. 9

Front 4 ribs get a 8...back 4 get a 6.

Mercy Baron

A little uneven cutting and sizes. 7

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
1/13/2013 12:47:58 pm

8 - Nice color and they look good; not sure what the bare spots on the 2nd & 4th ribs on top are; the cuts were a bit ragged and could be cleaned up. Need to be careful about placement; the 1st rib on the left on bottom is oddly placed. More care could be taken with the placement.

8 Looks good but nothing makes it pop!

Ed KCBS MCBJ
1/14/2013 01:31:18 am

Cuts a little ragged, size all over the place. Pretty small but nice pull back. I really like the look and texture, bet the taste great!!
Should be a 6 but the anticipated taste buds are telling me to go 7.

Lots wrong with this box, but the meat looks very appetizing to me. Ribs sizes are too dissimilar, not cut cleanly, not laid out well (some overlapping), but they look like they are NOT too heavily sauced so you will actually be able to taste the meat!

Dwain
1/14/2013 05:09:38 am

6 - pieces unevenly displayed. cuts jagged.

Karen
1/14/2013 05:52:32 am

7- The color is good but the cuts are not clean, the edges are a bit jagged and the pieces are not even.

Bill C. MCBJ/CTC KCBS

8. Placement and evenness of the ribs needs some work.

Glenn KCBS CBJ
1/14/2013 01:10:41 pm

As many commenters like to say - no wow factor. Uneven cuts. Uneven sauce. Not overly appetizing looking - 6.

I could have gone lower on this. Inconsistent sizing and some ragged cuts on the underneath layer but the front 4 look amazing and they would all have to taste great. Might be an 8 in person but I can't stop staring at the front row! Man, I wish BBQ season would start!

Tony CBJ

8 nice color, not very uniform samples

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
