Poor picture first of all. Also poor placement of ribs in the box. Hopefully there's at least six ribs here. My first thought would be a 7, maybe higher in person.

score=8 poor presentation

John/KCBS

6 May be poor photo quality, but meat not placed squarely in box. Garnish not even on all sides. Probably tastes better than it looks.

Frank MCBJ

8. May be higher in person - picture is underexposed. Nice color on meat. Suggestion - neaten up garnish and presentation.

9 light makes it look a little saucy but i am guessing it isn't based on the top portions. looks good to me!

Score 7: May be picture, but appears very dark; overly sauced, not a very attractive arrangement in the box.

7 - the picture is a little dark but the ribs appear to be over glazed for me. Also, the ribs should be centered in the box. The ribs are skewered to the left.

8. Looks great!

Nice sized ribs. good color. Easy on the sauce. Should have been centered in the box for a more balanced look but still a .............9

8 Looks promissing, nice color, arrangement good, need more light on this one.

Paul KCBS/ CBJ
1/16/2013 02:34:54 am

7 or 8 maybe more, maybe less can not tell from picture.

Ron Haag
1/16/2013 02:42:22 am

To dark. Can't see them

Don CBJ
1/16/2013 02:42:29 am

These ribs probably look great in a better light source.
The presentation could have been done better

score 7

pic is kinda of dark so it is tough to tell, but from what I can see box looks pretty good 8

8 - nice looking, not oversauced, ribs. Box would look better with two more ribs in it for better symmetry.

Dan KCBS CTC,MCBJ

Pic kinda dark, could be an 8.

Bob
1/16/2013 04:32:48 am

Score ? - Photo is so dark I can't tell if there are more than 5 ribs.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Picture is very dark hard to get good look at the ribs. From what I can see the ribs look dry and color is uneven. I'd give them a 7 maybe a 6.

Scott - KCBS CBJ
1/16/2013 05:51:23 am

7 - ribs look meaty but unevenly sauced and haphazardly placed.

Tom - CBJ w/ KCBS, MBN, NCPC & comp cook

Another "dark" photo, but the ribs look pretty appetizing to me. Uneven cuts, uneven coloration, uneven sauce, and ribs not centered in the box which detracts from the visual appeal. Might have been 8 in person.

Larry KCBS/CBJ-GBA/MCBJ

`Can't score this bad picture. However, I'd deduct for not centering the meat in the box to start....

Bill C. MCBJ/CTC KCBS

8. Center pieces in the box. Picture a little dark to actually see the meat. Nice glaze.

JohnnyY CBJ/NCBS
1/16/2013 12:02:22 pm

8 - I would like to have seen a picture with more light. The symmetry is off on this box; maybe two additional ribs placed on the right side would balance the box.

Paul (KCBS CBJ & Cook)
1/16/2013 12:49:24 pm

9 - very nicely sliced, even though it's a little uneven it still looks like a very well prepared rib. 8 bones is a plentiful box, giving photo the benefit of the doubt in being so dark... GIMME one!

Tony CBJ
1/16/2013 11:44:41 pm

8 very nice glaze, but sort of hides bottom 4

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
1/17/2013 01:10:24 am

7 - The picture is so bad it's difficult to judge. However, the placement in this box is sloppy! The ribs are too far to the left and you can barely see the rib on the upper right! You can't see the side of any rib, so it's impossible to see what the meat looks like. Given a better picture or in person, these ribs would possible score higher!

Matt KCBJ CBJ

8, maybe a 9 in person. I suggest centering the ribs in the box and cutting more evenly. Other than that, great box. Nice work.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Nice slab look on the ribs, good color, nice cuts. Size is fairly even.
Only problem is the whole pile is off center to the left.
Not much to complain about so I think it's very good so here's your 8.

Scott A. KCBS/CBJ
1/17/2013 09:02:57 pm

5? 6? 7? 8? 9?
Who can tell from this picture?
C'mon Herb! Please kick photos that are this bad out.
Cuts look good though

Score: 9
This photo is not doing the entry any favors (bad lighting, out of focus), but giving the benefit of the doubt, these look like some ribs I'd be more than happy to taste.

Sully CBJ 3145

7 I wanted to make it an 8 but but the picture is way too dark for me be sure. They do look tasty maybe over sauced can't really tell Sorry

Seaton Hall

Ribs looked good, but placement could have been better. The ribs in the back were uneven, making it an awkward looking box.

Score: 8

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
