Format to follow for judging:

SCORE: Here you type your score and reasons for your score

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: Here you can bring up items that did not affect your score, but will help the cook improve his or her box and any other comments that did not affect your score.

Thanks for following this format, judges! :-)

Score these ribs 7. Score could improve in person if the sides of the ribs could be seen and also get a better look at the sauce.

Next time try not putting so many ribs in the box as it looks stuffed.

Appearance Score: 6
The ribs have a nice finish, with a nice color. But the cuts and the lack of uniformity of the ribs hurt the overall appearance.
Suggestion: You've provided a nice "full" box with 10 ribs. More than enough for the 6 judges and 1 table captain to have thier choice. In this case I think less would have been more. Providing only 8 ribs that were more uniform in size and shape and removing 2 of the more awkward ribs. ould get a better score.

7 application of the sauce/glaze give the bark an almost muddy appearance. not very appetizing. i would have also like to have seen the profile of the meat so i could assess the the appearance.

7 - if I can see the sides of the ribs, they should be sauced. These ribs just don't do it for me, subjectively...

john kcbs

Score: 7 - Very dark, poorly presented

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
2/1/2013 12:23:02 am

Score: 7 (Above Average) Too heavy on the sauce and overly dark color are working against this entry. Size of the individual ribs is inconsistent. Having said that, what I can see of the meat doesn't look dry, so I'd be looking forward to tasting this entry.

Suggestion: Pay attention to the amount of rub/sauce and the cut when prepping the ribs for the box.

Frank KCBS MCBJ
2/1/2013 12:40:17 am

7 - Overly manipulated picture, difficult to judge. Overly sauced in places. Suggestion: neaten up the slices.

Fred KCBS
2/1/2013 12:41:05 am

hard to tell if this is an actualbox, but the ribs look great 7

Seaton Hall
2/1/2013 12:50:27 am

8. The meat is off center on the garnish and the far left rib has a gash in it. Both of those items detract from the total presentation. The samples look juich and moist. Just some more care in placing the box is needed.

Scott - KCBS CBJ
2/1/2013 01:05:28 am

Score = 6. Average box. Meat seems to have a bit of a crispy/gritty exterior to it.

Greg MCBJ/KCBS
2/1/2013 02:04:23 am

score=8 nice box, like the bark.
maybe a different arrangement that will show the side of the meat

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Your cuts are nice and clean but the sizes are all over the place.
As presented they look pretty overdone and dry, but these factors will be better addressed in taste and tender judging. The top left rib with the crack is very distracting and will cost points in scoring. It should have been buried in bottom row if possible.
This is average rib presentation 6

6 Unappealing look, over cooked perhaps, rough slicing, uneven sizes, sauce heavy.

BlueSmoke KCBS CBJ/COMP COOK
2/1/2013 02:40:54 am

7....Sauce looks goopy. The cut on the left front rib is distracting. Ribs are not evenly cut.

Smooth out the sauce. Spitz to put on a little shine. Cut ribs the same size. Cover up pale spots. Line up the ribs in the back row. Work on the garish for a more balanced look.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MABA Judge

7 - ribs are uneven in width. Left front rib appears broken. Box has no 'pop."

Suggestions; If you must use a faulty rib, like the left front rib, put it on the under-layer so the fault is hidden from view during appearance judging. Cut ribs uniformly to the same width and make them the same width for the entire length of the rib...the two right front ribs both have different widths at their ends, the ends in the garnish is wider than the elevated end.

Paul KCBS/CBJ

6 - Color seems dark, sauce looks to thick, cracks on face of ribs, uneven cuts.

Score: 8
Scored down a notch due to the uneven sizes. Beautiful meat tho...good color and pulled back on the bone perfectly

Rich M CBJ/KCBS
2/1/2013 06:33:29 am

Score = 8 A couple of uneven pieces on the right prevented a 9.

Suggestion: If you need to use the uneven pieces put them on the bottom.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 6. Those ribs look really dark and very unappealing. The front rib on the right looks over cooked as it seems to be falling apart in the box.

Suggestions: Look like the ribs are over rubbed with the rub forming a paste on top of the meat. Might wind up with a gritty look and taste with all the extra rub. Can't tell this though until we get a chance to taste them

Shawn-KCBS CBJ

I would give this box a 6. The ribs are very dark in color. They appear to be dry on the outside and then sauced to make look more appealing. The ribs are also not cut in uniform slices.

Larry MCBJ
2/1/2013 12:31:54 pm

7 - Uneven cuts, off center presentation, and gloppy sauce.

Greg Blume
2/1/2013 01:31:35 pm

7 I like the color, I want to taste them, no rib in the box looks the same, and the front left has a large cut on it, and the cut marks on the forward right 3 just bad appearance.

Greg. Cbjkcbs

7. Too many ribs. It looks too crowded.

Try putting less in the container and then arranging them in a different way.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
2/2/2013 06:14:49 am

Score: 8. The ribs are a little dark for me but they appear to be well-prepared.

Suggestion: Place the ribs so that more of the meat is visible; these could appear dry the way they're placed.

Dan KCBS CTC,MCBJ
2/2/2013 07:08:08 am

8 the cut on the front left rib takes it down

Kev B
2/2/2013 09:57:13 am

SCORE: 6. Different size of ribs. Also they are not evenly cut.

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: Did you only cook one rack? It looks like a take order from a national BBQ chain. Maybe cook another rack or so, so you can more consistant look pieces. The 2 pieces on each end should not be in the box back my eyes keep at them and not middle of the box. Ribs look little charred but could be pic.

Matt KCBS CBJ

9 - Excellent! No suggestions for improvement.

TerryA
2/3/2013 08:24:12 am

7 - the pieces do not look uniform and appear to have a burnt look to them. If the front pieces had of been the same size as the first two from the left to right, I would go with an 8. The last piece on the right looks very odd shaped. The sauce does not glisten and thus not very eye appealing.

Tony S CBJ

8 nearly perfect good color

7
DRY! Sizes too dissimilar, some with bones sticking out some without, jumbled appearance, no POP!

dwain - CBJ/KCBS
2/8/2013 04:50:36 am

Score: 7 - above average

Comment: Not sure what happened to the front left rib - seems to have a gash in it.

Suggestion: Center presentation in box. Place in box uniformly.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
