8 - glaze a little uneven.

9 Judging from appearance only. Looks good enough to want to taste for tenderness and taste.

9! Good layout, good knife skills, even sized and color. Look moist.

Never thought I'd say this, but there is too much meat in the box. I'd give it an 8.

Bob

Score - 9 See you can get more than 6 ribs in a box. These are pretty light in color and I hope they are fully cooked.

7. Sauce appears a bit clumped in some areas and lacking in others.

Made the TC happy with all those ribs.

9 - Very nice box of ribs...not perfect, but not "manufactured" looking either.

Damn Herb, did you hunt for all winners or are you cooks really gettin it?
Great color, nice shine, good clean cuts, all the same width.
Nice job Mr./Mrs. cook!!
Only thing I can see less than excellent, sauce is a pinch gloppy and the last 2 ribs on front row are not lined up perfectly.
I'm sorry, really had to look for something wrong.....
Here's your 9.

Less would have been more. The box is overwhelming. 6 judges and a Table Captain, 12 ribs for 7 people. 8 ribs is a good number.

8, never seen 12 bones on a box before but that's all right by me. it looks like the sauce is a little blotchy and areas on the front in the front row have no sauce, maybe just the photo or light

Bob - CBJ/KCBS

Score 8- Nice color on the ribs.

Greg cbjkcbs

7. Too many ribs. Put in only the best 6 add a few more greens and it would have been a better score. Maybe a little less sauce before turn in

I really like this presentation. Both sections are from the same rack. Not mix & match. The cuts are surgical. And you let the ribs speak for themselves, minimal use of parsley. "9"

Good looking box of ribs but a little too much sauce.....8.

8 - Good mahogony color, but not uniform, slight size differences.

Score: 9 - Color is excellent, slicing is even, placement is uniform, delicious looking box. Nice job.

Don

Good looking box. Ribs have a uniform color and cut and there are an adequate number of pieces for a judging table. The sauce does not seem to be to heavy. I like this box.

Harvey Myrick link

Score a 9!! Good looking box. Looks as if each row of ribs are from the same slab. Hard to do, I feel. The grazing table will love the extra ribs in box. Where can I taste these??

DWain

8 - very good.

it apears that the sauce is applied thicker in some areas over others.

Johnny Y / CBJ, KCBJ, NCBS

9 - Consideration should be given to the symmetry of the presentation. The two pieces on the right side causes the balance to be distorted. Using eight pieces instead of twelve might have work for a better visual appearance and not looked overcrowded.

The ribs look nice but small. Makes me wonder how much meat is on them

8...Good color. Ribs evenly cut. Full box.

Over sauced. Sauce not evenly applied. No sauce on the bottom edge of the front row.

9 Very good looking, generous selection, color and sauce about right.

Score: 9+
Comments: Impressive! 6 bones of a St. Louis rack and 6 bones of baby backs! You are really showing off your skills and confidence! Cutting is perfect. Ribs all look great, good color and saucing. Make sure you get sauce on the very end of the bones too. Great job, I hope they tasted as good as they looked!

I would give this box an 8. Ribs look great but they apprear to be sauced unevenly.

Don

Way too much in box. Sauce appears thicker in middle of rib and some appear to have no sauce or rub
score 6

Score = 9: I kind of waffled between an 8 and 9 here. The sauce is looks a little uneven, but overall these ribs look so great I had to go with the 9.

8 sauce is blotched needs to be more uniform

Looks EXCELLENT! Moist and meaty without too much sauce.
Now THAT'S what I'm talking about!

8. Gorgeous ribs but the box looks overstuffed with so many bones in it. The sauce is also a wee bit uneven. But I would look forward to eating one of these at the table.

    NAME FIELD ON FORM:
     State name/CBJ Organization (i.e, Tom - CBJ/KCBS). CBJ=Certified BBQ Judge

    EMAIL FIELD ON FORM:
You must be a "registered" BBQ Critic Online Judge in order to judge boxes on this site. Proof of registration is your email. All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

SUGGESTIONS: Feel free to offer any suggestions on how to improve the box (keep separate from reasons why you scored the box). You can mention anything here such as garnish suggestions.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
