SCORE/REASONS: Here you type your score and reasons for your score

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: Here you can bring up items that did not affect your score, but will help the cook improve his or her box and any other comments that did not affect your score.

Thanks for following this format, judges! :-)

9 looks perfect!

Score 7. The ribs appear overcooked and dry. I would suggest that the cook consider less ribs in this box. It would be much easier to organize the meat and the is no reason to place twice the required ribs in the box. I do not believe that the extra ribs will improve the score.

Although garnish is optional, the box looks bare without it. I'd give it a 7.

Nice full box of ribs. Ribs are uniform but it looks like they are over-sauced to cover up possibly being dry. 7

7 way too much sauce and unevenly applied.

8, maybe 7 in person. Nice full box of ribs. How refreshing to see.

Although it did affect my score, there's a bit of a thread of meat on the underneath rib, second from right that is a distraction. Some judges will take off for that. My only real critique is there appears to be too much sauce...making one wonder if the meat flavor will come through it all. I hope so, but I'm skeptical.

SCORE/REASONS: 7 too much sauce

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: less ribs would allow the viewer to see the sides of the meat better.

9 only wondering where is the garnish?

7. May be an 8 in person. The ribs appear to be nicely cooked, but the sauce overwhelms.Very clean box given all the sauce. Part of the problem is the photo quality.

Suggestion: I don't know why, but some judges seem to mark down for too much meat. That should not be part of the criteria. That said, maybe less meat to appease those judges?

8 - would like it less wet.

7 Tough one to call; too much light reflection in photo. Looks heavy on the sauce. Uniform size pieces, good cutting, rather brave to go without the garnish.

Dang, a dozen bones in one box, a first for me! I see some ragged edges and difference in placement of bottoms on the front row are not enhancing the look. Pretty saucy looking.
I'd give it a very good 8 but above average 7 is just around the corner.

Comments: Shows that you do not need garnish to create a nice looking box.

Uneven sauce application, and maybe a little too much sauce. I'd give it a 7 or 8.

difficulty to tell, but looks like uneven slicing along with uneven saucing.

7 - Too many ribs, no garnish. This looks like my take home box from the BBQ restaurant we just had dinner at.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reasons: 7/Too much sauce; I cannot see the meat due to the amount of sauce on the ribs.

Suggestions/Comments: Ensure the sauce you provide enhances the quality of the ribs but does not overwhelm them.

7 - the sauce is uneven and is globbed on in places

Suggestion - make sure the ribs are not oversauced and the sauce is evenly distributed.

Appearance Score: 8
I usually don't care for loading the box up with ribs. However with the lack of garnish, making the box appear fuller is definately a plus.

Good Job!

Lighten up on the sauce. It will cost you a point with some Judges.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
