PLEASE IGNORE THE FOIL! Treat it like you would Garnish. In other words, do not judge it. ;-)

6 cut very uneven, placent is poor and several jagged edges (tags) color is uneven with pieces or clumps on them doesn't look like the person cared and just threw them in the box

Another box with Illegal foreign object (foil). I'd ask the table captain to get a ruling from the contest rep.

Not a very good presentation. Ribs are differnt sizes and poor arrangement. 7

Next time get ribs more even in size and concentrate on cutting them better.

7 uneven pice size and sauce not evenly applied.

SCORE/REASONS:6 sloppy knife work. meat looks overcooked
SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: put move time into presentation. sharper knife, make ribs a consistent size

5, maybe 6 in real life. Was this a real turn-in box? I'm trying very hard, but failing, to find something good to say about it. Ok, there's 7 pieces which means the table captain can have a rib...if (s)he wants it. The ribs were irregularly, but not heavily, sauced.

Suggestions: Where to start?! Please use great care in slicing your ribs...with a VERY sharp knife or maybe use an electric knife. The shapes are very irregular & cut edges are quite ragged. The pieces appear to have been carelessly dumped into the box...were you running late for turn-in?

Tony S CBJ

7 pretty rough slices with mixed colors probably from multiple slabs

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

5. The foil is very neat. Need to work on the knife skills - even, smooth slicing will enhance the appearance score. Even up the color and the sauce to get a higher score. Clean any visible bits and sauce up before turn-in.

DQ for foil. Take away the foil and it's a 5. Please, sharpen your knife.

7--ragged knife cuts uneven sauce and sze

I always try to say something positive for each entry so here it is,
it's not the worse I've ever seen...
The cuts are ragged, sizes are eneven, placement is sloppy, sauce is gloppy and here or there.
Spend some time researching boxes on this sight and keep on cooking you'll get there.
For now, 5 below average.

Score = 7: Cuts are uneven and look ragged. Sauce is also uneven as well.

Ribs look dry to me. Or were they cut with a dull knife?

Kendall - CBJ
4/9/2013 03:16:50 am

Cuts look ragged and the sauce application is uneven. I'd give it a 7.

Tom - CBJ w/ KCBS, MBN, NCPC & comp cook

Looks like these ribs were NOT placed in the box carefully; thereby, resulting in uneven placement. Unevenly sliced and sized. Unevenly sauced and appearing dry in places.

Keith CBJ

SCORE/REASONS: 6 - While these look like they have the potential to score quite high in taste/tenderness categories -- they aren't much to look at.

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: Sharpen the knives before cutting for turn in and go easy with the sauce brush (or don't use it at all!).

greg - cbjkcbs

7- add a garnish not tinfoil, Please!

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
4/9/2013 08:54:52 am

Score/Reasons: 7/ribs are poorly cut/separated with ragged edges; the ribs are not symmetrically placed in the box, which makes it look sloppy!

Suggestions/Comments: Ensure you are careful when cutting the ribs and trim ragged edges off them so they are smooth in appearance; also, find a symmetry that works for you.

Greg

5 - very sloppy. Please become a judge and you will be able to learn from the experience what other teams turn in and your efforts will be rewarded, good luck!

7. I hate to judge so low but the cuts and sizes are pretty ruff and the sauce looks really uneven. On the plus side they have great color

Eggspert, KCBS CBJ
4/9/2013 02:30:01 pm

Score: 7
Comments: Great color, just clean up presentation. The cutting is a little sloppy and there is some spots of seasoning or char on the face of one of the ribs.

Appearance Score: 7
The ribs look good enough, but ragged knife cuts really hurt the appearance.

5....Not any positives on this box.

Sharpen your knife and make nice clean, even cuts. Goopy, uneven sauce. Close the gaps between the ribs.

Dwain
4/10/2013 05:04:33 am

7 - some pieces larger than others, cuts were jaged with torn pieces attached.

Suggestion get a really sharp knife and cut each piece the same width with nice clean cuts.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ
4/10/2013 08:09:24 am

6 - the meat looks dry and the cuts look rough. The size of the cut ribs are not even thus making alignment in the box off.

Suggestion: might look better if there were eight ribs instead of seven. This would make it easier to light up the ribs. Also, care should be taken then cutting the ribs.

Old Goat

8 Pieces look as though they would be a tad tough. A different cut would make the pieces appear a little more meaty and desirable.

score/ reason 6. not uniform, looks like you need a sharper knife

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
