8 like to see a double cut
The upper tier are slightly, yet noticeably narrower than the bottom.

Good looking box, i like the light glaze I would give it an 8

Roger
4/28/2013 08:45:48 am

Other than the uneven cut on top left ribs look pretty good would go 7.5- 8.0

9 - Looks very good. Glaze instead of heavy sauce.

Sandi MCBJ link

7 - nothing special, unevenly sized pieces, some look a little burnt in spots

Bill F

8 I like the look; generous rib meat, wish I was there; but be careful with cutting and matching ribs, be sure the knife is sharp.

Mike Cannon

8 - color a little artificial to me.

9 looks great to me!

7. Ribs are a little uneven is size and even with sauce these ribs look dry.

9 - A good looking, balanced box.

8
Looking at how they are cut, they appear to be overdone

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

9. Nice looking ribs.

Suggestion:
Try to neaten up the slicing, edges are a little ragged. Touch up the bare spots - see the bottom middle rib.

Score 9. These look like great ribs and I would love to taste them.

score=8
not real appealing but might be tasty

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Well there's an interesting presentation! Edges are a little ragged, and cuts could be staighter. I like the look of texture on the ribs. Would look forward to having a bite.
I think I could go a very good 8.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ

8 maybe? Hard to do much with this one because the pic is so off-angle. From this view the ribs look pretty good with the exception that they might be a bit overdone and slightly crusted. Cant really tell about the sauce but they do have decent color. A better pic and these might be really awesome!

Keith KCBS-CBJ/CTC
4/29/2013 04:52:21 am

9 - They look excellent

I might recommend more uniform cuts as other judges are going to hit you with 8s and 7s for not having them all the same size. I won't count off for that -- in this case -- because they all still look great and that box is excellent.

Larry MCBJ
4/29/2013 04:54:55 am

8 - Ragged, uneven cuts and sizes O/W a 9..

Bill C.-MCBJ/CTC KCBS
4/29/2013 06:53:10 am

Nice looking ribs. 8.

Suggest you even the cuts to make them the same size.

Score = 9, nice looking ribs, cut with a lot of meat on them.

I would give this box a 9. Great color and great presentation!

Don Ousley CBJ

First glimpse looks like ribs could have been cut a little better, plenty of meat. Also the coloring is a little strange and needs to be more even across the ribs
score 6

8 - That is a very good looking box!

Jeff KCBS CBJ

8. Cuts a little jagged and uneven

Mike S.; KCBS MCBJ &,BBQ-Brethren RJ

7 - I like how the ribs were cut, but if you are going to use sauce it needs to be applied more evenly. Also the bottom rib on the far right, looks like it was cut too close to the bone, with very little meat on that edge. Bottom middle top rib, part of the bone seems to be showing

Tom - CBJ w/ KCBS, MBN, NCPC & comp cook

SCORE/REASONS: 7 - looks pretty good, but several problems - uneven coloration, uneven saucing, uneven slicing, just loses some appetizing appeal.

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: Try lining up the ribs with the bottom ribs toward the top of the box and the top ribs covering the lower front of the bottom ribs instead of reversed as you have it. Might even place the bottom ribs on top as they look a wee bit better anyway.

7 at best......Pretty even cuts. Color is OK...

Weird box (DQ if KCBS)...Sauce uneven and blotchy. Some brunt sauce. Layout might improve if you but the front row on top of the back row.

Michael CMBJ KCBS

8/9 but possible 1
Looks like the box is illegal,
Nice size on the ribs. little white showing on the front rib, front right rib and back left rib looks like they weren't cut properly.

7 - the top of the ribs look to be overcooked and dry. It appears when one bites the rib, the top layer will come off all at once. The red color is unnatural looking.

Suggestion - be careful when cooking the meat and keep the meat more natural looking and not covered with sauce

looks good to me 9

If this photo was taken from the judges point of view, I give it a 6. Seeing the pieces from this end-on angle does a disservice to both the cook as well as the judges.

Please take your photos from the judges point of view.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
