8 good looking boxbox
Cuts are a little off

Other than what looks to be uneven saucing on top ribs I would go 8.0 myself.

George

8 - Appears to be oversauced.

8 - look moist and juicy. Want to try them

Bill F

8 Good color, generous offering, may be heavy on the sauce, but something about the ribs not exactly matching (size / shape) bothers me.

Mike Cannon
4/28/2013 11:33:10 am

8 - a tad light. doesn't look like much smoke color.

7 sauce looks uneven and heavily applied; rib slices have varying widths.

Ike, CBJ/KCBS

7 possibly 8 in person. Uneven sizes and sauce isn't even.

8 - Box appears out of balance. Something about the finishing glaze throws me off also.

Maybe the two on the right inserted between the ones on the left, to form more of an even arch.

Good looking bunch of ribs

8. Maybe higher in person. Sauce appears a little heavy, may be the picture.
Suggestion:
Try to straighten the slicing and match up the lengths and curve of the bones. Tough to do when working with multiple racks. Glaze is fine, but try to even it up. May have missed a couple of the bottom ribs near the top.

Score 9. Nice entry, but maximum amount of sauce. Any heavier coating of sauce and I would deduct a point.

Greg MCBJ/KCBS

score=8
sort of standard looking not quite excellent.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
4/29/2013 03:14:03 am

Due to difference in widths front row is noticeably longer than back row throwing off balance. Sauce coverage is uneven.
I'll go above average 7 but the average score of 6 is closer than you want.

Larry MCBJ

8- uneven cuts.

Keith KCBS-CBJ/CTC

7 - Uneven cuts, non uniform size and a somewhat haphazard placement are holding this box back.

These ribs are very shiny. I could be a result of the photography but what it looks like is a box of oversauced ribs. I'd rather have them come in with NO sauce than oversauced on account of it being a meat contest and not a sauce contest. A judge might fear that something is being hidden.

Missing is the mahogany color of well-smoked ribs. Why? Is it there but obscured by red?

Ultimately these might be the tastiest ribs to hit the table in a given contest - and they'd be scored as such - but it'd be hard to tell from this image. Might want to consider straighter cuts and truthfully -- if the ribs are done right I'd rather you take four each from two slabs and keep them together than this mix-and-match arrangement.

Nice looking ribs. 8.

Suggest you evenly cut the ribs to be the same size, i.e. second rib from the left in front row.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8, there are some pale spots on the rib that detract also cuts are not quite even.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ

I would give this box a 7. The ribs could be trimmed more uniform and the color is very light on the meat.

Don Ousley CBJ

appears someone just put BBQ sauce on raw ribs.
They need better color and cut more even before boxing
score 6

Matt KCBS CBJ

7 - Above average.

The cuts are a little uneven, and the top right two ribs look a little dry on the end.

9. Nuff said

8 - Nice looking box, but a little heavy on the sauce for my taste. The top two ribs on the right look like the sauce was either not applied, or partially applied

SCORE/REASONS: 7 - looks pretty good, but several problems - uneven coloration, appears over-sauced, uneven slicing, not lined up very good, just loses some appetizing appeal.

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: Try lining up the bottom ribs on top as they look a wee bit better in size and coloration. A SMALL seperation of the two left front ribs will ensure a judge doesn't say that they are not cut through (even though there appears to be 8 ribs in the box)

7.....Good color.

Goopy sauce. Appears the bottom 2 ribs on the right doesn't have any sauce on the ends. Front row not lined up.

Try to make the ribs same size.
try to make the garnish look fuller.

8 - Overall the ribs look pretty good. There is too much sauce and the appearance is too red.

Suggestion - Use less sauce and allow the rib to show through more.

8 - nice looking box of ribs. Sauce not overdone.

Suggest more even slicing of pieces.

Wish that picture would blow up
Sauce seems uneven as well as sizing

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
