8 looks awkward with the top rib on its side
Would prefer all ribs slightly overlapped to show side

Roger

Ribs are a little dark in spots to me would go 7-7.5

George

7 - Odd arrangement. Does not look appealing.

9 - Look yummy. Nice presentation

7 Color is good, sauce okay, but uniformity is missing. My bet is this one wins on taste, texture.

5 - onside rib is a huge downer.

9 I like it!

7. Ribs appear even in size but the top rib looks dry and over-cooked.

8 - I like the glaze and I know these ribs have to be tender because of the size of the bones - very light or young pig. Slice on side seems to indicate not enough fat rendered for me.

I don't think putting that one on its edge added to the appearance to this box

8 and I SOOO want to do a 9 but the that dark uneven finish is a killer. Other than the areas that (possibly because of the pic) look a bit overdone these ribs look great. Some judges will kick a point because of the uneven sizes. It sounds crazy but whip out a measuring tape and arrange them shortest to longest so it isn't so obvious.

8. Even up the color to get closer to a 9.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 8. Due to the color and heavy sauce this entry does not allow me to score higher than an 8.

Greg MCBJ/KCBS

score=9
could use a little polishing but a good looking box.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Nice arrangement, looking at the cartiledge on the top piece isn't very appettising. The dark spots not so much either. A little more time lining up ribs would help also.
I'm in for a above average 7.

Larry MCBJ

9 - Makes me want some!!!

Keith KCBS-CBJ/CTC
4/29/2013 05:04:01 am

8 - Outside of potential oversaucing, some uneven cuts, placement and picking-and-choosing from different racks there's nothing wrong here. For me those are small issues when considering how good these look.

Lawdy lawd -- I would be stoked to see these show up at my table.

Bill C/MCBJ/CTC KCBS

9.

Hard to tell the moistness of the top rib because of the flash from the camera.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8, ribs have some dark spots that make them look over done.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ

I would give this box a 9. Great color on the meat and I like to see the side shot of the rib!

Don Ousley cbj

For comp these ribs need better attention when being smoked. The color across the ribs are off.
Maybe it's the photo
score 7-

8 - In my opinion, those are excellent looking ribs, but had to score an 8 because of the uneven cuts and because the sauce looks like it may have begun to caramelize.

Jeff KCBS CBJ
4/29/2013 02:33:12 pm

8. 9 if they had come from the same rack

Mike S.; KCBS MCBJ &,BBQ-Brethren RJ

8 - I like the fact that the cook was not afraid to show the meat; though the photograph doesn't give it justice.

8......Good color. Even cut. Meat looks moist.

Sauce caramelized a little to much. Line up the ribs.

SCORE/REASONS: 5 - looks slightly below average with several problems - looks DRY to me!, uneven coloration, uneven slicing, sizes too dissimilar, meat shrinkage on the bone varies, not lined up very good, the rib on its side doesn't help the appearance of this box.

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: correct the findings listed as problems above.

Michael CMBJ KCBS

8/9
Looks good.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC

8 - The ribs are not consistent in size. It is difficult to tell the quality of the rib at the top because of the glare which might be from the camera. I am giving the eight because I am not taking into consideration the item to the left since it appears to me not to be in the box. If the item is in the box, them the score would be a 6.

Suggestion - Make sure the ribs are the same size when presented.

8 - nice looking box of ribs.

Better alignment of the pieces would have gotten a higher score.

score/comment 7 color looks a little dark, looks a tad bit over done, could be a little straighter looking on placement maybe an 8 inperson

Scott A. KCBS/CBJ
5/1/2013 06:52:34 am

8
Maybe just a little too much char on these
Even though it's nice to be able to get a decent side view, a single rib placed like that is always a little off putting

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
