8 poor pic so siding w/cook
Maybe a bit scorched on upper end, really hard to tell

Roger
4/28/2013 08:58:43 am

Very dark and over sauced would go 6-6.5

George
4/28/2013 09:21:20 am

6 or 7. Too dark. Looks oversauced. Too much empty space in box.

7 - In favor of the cook. Wow those look dark. Odd placement in the box.

Bill F

9 I wish the photo were better but those ribs are so well matched, with nice cutting and placement. The sauce is fine, just distorted by the camera flash. (Someone in these contests must learn more about photography.)

Mike Cannon

9 - love the color.

Bruce Needham
4/28/2013 11:39:15 am

I would give this box a 7. Ribs are to small for me and they look too dark. Maybe just the photo.

7 another horrible picture but sauce looks too thick and char seems too heavy (burned).

Ike, CBJ/KCBS
4/28/2013 01:49:49 pm

6 possibly 7 in person. Ribs look burnt and sauce doesn't help much.

Lots of open space here. You could get 4 More good looking ribs in the box. Fill the box with great looking food! 7

Doug Winter

5 points. Very dark color, looks over cooked, to small, need to fill box more.

7 - Need a lot of napkins on these ribs. Sauced heavily to hide being over cooked?

Chaz D
4/29/2013 12:01:02 am

7 These ribs are pretty dark and way over-sauced. All this could be the result of the pic but this is the best we can do with the pic we have.

These mini ribs look overdone to me. Maybe it was all that could be salvaged?

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
4/29/2013 01:44:15 am

6. May be higher in person. Dark picture makes the darker style ribs even darker. Sauce appears very heavy.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
4/29/2013 01:50:38 am

Score 7. The amount of ribs in this box would allow them to be spread out so the lower one can be viewed. It appears the cook is trying to hide the lower ribs. Also please reduce the amount of sauce on the ribs,

Ed KCBS MCBJ
4/29/2013 02:54:31 am

A little on the smeary saucey side. Other than that I have nothing to nit pick about. Good job!
2 more ribs (as they are pretty small) would have got you that 9.
Very good for an 8.

Greg MCBJ/KCBS

score=7
spread them out, get creative

Larry MCBJ

7- Look burned, over sauced, and off-center. Maybe a 6 in person.

Bill C./MCBJ/CTC KCBS
4/29/2013 07:03:27 am

7. Appears over-sauced, and not spaced well in the box.

Hard to see the meat because of the dark picture of the meat.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 7, ribs look very dark, might be a little from poor lighting in the photo. Cuts are a little uneven as well.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ
4/29/2013 07:55:26 am

I would give this box an 8. The ribs appear to be cooked perfectly, but there looks to be to much sauce for my liking.

Don Ousley

not a good photo really don't want to score this\

Matt KCBS CBJ

7 - It might be the picture, but the ribs look really dark. From what I can see, two have sauce on the bone, and one doesn't... the devil is in the details.

Jeff KCBS CBJ

6. Has shine but took dark

Mike S.; KCBS MCBJ &,BBQ-Brethren RJ

7 - Hard to judge due to the poor quality of the photo. From what I can judge, it looks like too much sauce has been applied.

7.....Even cut. Meat pulled away from the bone.

To dark with heavy sauce. Box looks empty.

SCORE/REASONS: 6 - extremely difficult to see much with these ribs as the lighting is so bad, but they look over-sauced and a bit dark to be very appetizing

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: a better photograph would DEFINITELY HELP!!! Lighten up the sauce AND lighten up on the sauce would help tremendously in making these ribs look appetizing to me! Could be better centered in the box also so that there is an even frame around the meat - not a judging point, just a suggestion.

Looks overcooked.
Pay a little more attention to details with the garnish. looks like the garnish was just thrown in without thought.

5 - The ribs are very dark in color, shiny and slick looking. The picture is dark but I think the color of the ribs is due to the sauce. The ribs to not look appetizing to me. Way too much sauce.

Suggestion - Use less sauce, don't over sauce. Try to keep the meat more natural looking.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge

7 - 6 pieces = legal box

These ribs appear over sauced in the photo. The ribs are so small they almost are lost. Suggest adding at least a couple more pieces. A full-ish box makes a better appearance...even if it's oversauced.

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score/ comment 7 Looks over cooked and way over sauced. looks like sauce dripped on the greenery just off the lower left rib

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
