Ribs look good would go 8.5-9.0

8 - Looks good.

9 - Look yummy. Nice placement in the box. Look moist. Want to try them.

8 Would be a 9 but for uneven cutting. The color and look is great. Sauce is perfect. Wish I was there.

Bruce Needham

I would give this box a 8. The top of the front row of ribs not even. I like the ribs to all be even as possible.

Mike Cannon

7 - color good - don't like separation of ribs. fill the box.

8 pieces in back look thinner than front (not as wide). Otherwise, looks good.

9! This is a very good looking box of ribs. Not too much sauce so you can taste the meat! Good job!!!

The ribs are nice, I would have added another rib top and bottom row to fill it out. Don't let the green show between sample. 7

7 - Just doesn't have that snap a really good box has.

Ribs are not meaty enough for me.

9 Nice looking bones...good color and the sauce is nice and even. My only picky critique would be to watch your cuts...they're a bit uneven and most of the 8's you get will be because of that reason.

I would like to see more uniformity in the size of the ribs. The ones on top look bigger than those underneath

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
4/29/2013 01:46:02 am

Score 8. Nice ribs. I would like to see the ribs more uniform in size.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

9. Nice color and lightly sauced.

Suggestion:
Neaten up the slicing and arrangement. Top layer appears to be from one rack placement angles down to the right and the bottom layer is aligned nearly strait across. This detracts from the symmetry of the box.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Very nice looking ribs, nice color, not super saucey, nice sheen.
The difference in size is noticeable, I realize cutting each bone the same width is very difficult on each rack of ribs but to me that is what makes a 8 box a 9 box.
This is very good for an 8.

Greg MCBJ/KCBS

there you go, can't wait to try them.

Larry MCBJ

8 -

If you're putting gaps between the ribs, just be sure it's uniform.

Keith KCBS-CBJ/CTC
4/29/2013 05:11:42 am

8 - Nice mahogany color on these. Looks like a good peppery rub evenly distributed on there.

I'd recommend -- if you end up with half the ribs thinner than the other half -- to put the smaller ones on top? This looks odd with the big ribs up top and then big gaps underneath. Outside of that I couldn't venture a guess where these might land on taste but I'd certainly like to give them a try.

8. Nice color appearance.

Suggest making the presentation more uniform, i.e. size of the slices.

Score = 8 Cuts on the ribs are uneven.

Ribs have good color. Needs more attention when cutting and getting ribs close in width
score 7

8 - Very good. Ribs aren't uniform in size, but other than that, looks good!

8 maybe 9. Would have looked better if not spread apart

9 - Nice color, and the glaze seems well caramelized. A few of the ribs on the bottom are fairly small compared to the other ribs. The cook may have been better off just sending in six ribs that were more uniform in size. My eyes are draw to the smaller ribs, because they stick out so much.

8.....Nice color and glaze.

Different size ribs. Back row not lined up properly.

SCORE/REASONS: 9 - NOT perfect, but these ribs look pretty dadgum good!

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: center the front ribs a wee bit higher in the box so that a little green is framed all around the meat - NOT a judging point, but it will help the overall appearance. Try to keep the spacing between ribs consistant (a wee bit too much space between the back ribs on the right) - BOY IS THAT PICKY!!!.

Work on getting the parsley the same color, no light green/ yellow. Attention to detail makes the judge feel appreciated.

8 - The box looks clean and neat. The ribs are of different sizes. Some are wide others are thin. The spacing between the ribs could be better. I would like to try these ribs.

Suggestion - cut the meat so the ribs are of equal size and space them evenly in the box.

OK, the ribs almost LooK appealing, however, to me, they look like they are "sweating". I really don't care for the space between the ribs, I don't mind seeing one on it's side, but seems to me they might be sweating because they WERE hot, and the space between them cooled them down, they look like they are cold, or getting cold. And cold ribs is somewhat unappealing.

7 - generally a decent looking box.

Score would have been higher if the pieces had been of uniform width, both compared to each other as well as within a slice itself. My eye finds the narrow open space between each slice rather offputting.

score/ comment 8 not uniform in size, knife cuts could be a little straighter

9 slight possiblility of an 8
Great color and not oversauced. you can see the fleck of pepper are evenly distributed.
Some uneven sizing here but these look great

seven--irregular size of ribs--poor knife cuts

tightening up the ribs would make everything look better

7 average, not much to drop a score in this box. Display does show some care.
Would like to see the cut side.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
