9 - Nice glaze but not oversauced. Looks good.

8,nice box

7, maybe even an 8. But first appearance a 7. The meat itself looks pretty good but obviously from varying racks as some have bone extending and others don't. I would think it would get varying scores from judges on tenderness as some seem to be more done then others. Sauce not uniform over each rib.

Ike, CBJ/KCBS

8. Ribs are evenly sized and look good in the box. Dark color and exposed rib bones could mean the meat is overcooked.

Russ Hazzon

8 - Sauce looks a little thick and uneven.

Nice looking ribs, but you want to try thinning the sauce or straining/blending it. It's hard to tell from the pic, but the sauce either has lumps of fruit in it or was not applied evenly.

8 - good but not magical. purely subjective.

score=9
might be a bit over done but an excellent box

8 looks good but i don't personally like seeing the bone end. gives the rib an "overcooked" appearance.

Chaz D

Score: 8 Work on your slices being a bit more even and this is there. The ribs look awesome. Good color and pullback on the bones.

I think if you work on which bones go next to each other a bit more (yeah its like a puzzle) You can minimize the uneven size look that you have a touch of here.

Score/Reasons = 9, Looks dadgum appetizing to me! Not perfect, and I'm not crazy about the bones sticking out on the top not being similar, but I can't wait to try one!

Suggestions/Comments = Try having all ribs "angled" the same direction (top of right rib on top and bottom layers are angled the opposite way of the others in that row) - VERY picky, but it would help the appearance.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
5/15/2013 01:35:43 am

Score/Reasons = 9, nice color, sauce may be a little heavy, but deserves an excellent score.

Suggestions/Comments = Try to get the slicing a bit straighter. Some will mark down for this as well as not matching up the ribs a little better - some show alot of bone and slant in opposite directions.

9 - Looks moist and great color.

8........Nice color. Looks moist. Meat pulled back from the bone. Sauce is goopy in spots. Even cuts.

Suggestion: The bottom of a couple of ribs need sauce.

7 Color is good and sauce about right but this box has a "mixed and match" look. That is, the rack was sliced but then the ribs were mixed in the arrangement. And please use a sharp knife next time.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Nice full box of great looking ribs. Great color and texture. Cut well, arranged well.
Excellent 9.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
5/15/2013 04:01:18 am

Score = 8, sauce is uneven and cuts are uneven.

Comments: I really like the look of the lettuce in the box. More teams I am talking to are using lettuce. Cuts down the time picking parsley off the meat.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
5/15/2013 04:17:19 am

Score/Reasons: 8 - nicely arranged box of ribs. Color appears rather dark.

Suggestions/Comments: Consider saucing the exposed bones so they don't shine like headlights. The very dark color implies dry & overcooked to my eye, even though I'll judge THAT when it's in my mouth.

Keith CBJ/CTC
5/15/2013 05:17:22 am

Score/Reasons = 8 - these ribs look great and would easily have earned a 9 from me if they weren't just coated in sauce.

Suggestions/Comments = Given that too much sauce tends to overshadow the meat and the smoke flavor I would suggest easing back on the sauce. Not saying don't use it but it's true -- sometimes less really is more.

Score / Reasons = 8 Some areas of the ribs look to me a little dry. Could be the sauce is not applied evenly.

Suggestions / Comments = make sure the sauce covers all areas of the rib. Being careful not to slather it on. Keep it on the lighter side.

Score 8 - Good looking box, neat cuts, good layout, nice color

Comments - Not sure about that curly garnish but the ribs look tasty

9 Good rib box.

I'd give it an 8. The sauce could be a little more evenly applied, but other than that it looks great.

Tony S CBJ

9 excellent color and presentation

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
5/16/2013 06:10:11 am

Score/Reasons: 8/ Ribs are inconsistent sizes and borderline over-sauced.

Suggestions/Comments: Take just a little more care when cutting the ribs for presentation and use a light touch with the sauce and these would be a 9. Even with the small problems noted above, these ribs look very appetizing! Wish I could have a bite!

Score/Reason: I would give this box a 9. Looks Great!

Suggestion: May want to cut back on the sauce a little.

Mike S.; KCBS MCBJ &,BBQ-Brethren RJ
5/16/2013 08:52:05 am

Score/Reasons = 8; May have given it a 9, but for me there is too much sauce and I can not see the meat.

Suggestions/Comments = I really don't pay that much attention to the garnish, other to see if it is legal. But this garnish really stands out. You can tell the cook but a little extra effort into his presentation.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
5/16/2013 10:57:07 am

Score 7. Reasons: The ends of the ribs, not hidden by the sauce, seem to be burnt and overcooked. They may score high in taste and/or tenderness, but the appearance is not enticing.

Donna B
5/16/2013 04:33:53 pm

Score/Reasons = 7. Neat box, like lettuce vs parsley. Meat looks dark (dry) around edges.

Lorne Rae
5/17/2013 01:24:58 pm

a 6. The bottom row is mainly hidden from view and the left top knife cut is ragged. The color is even, spacing is good and it looks moist. I cannot make out the garnish from the photo.

Sharon KCBS CBJ

9-Look delicious. I want some! Very nice presentation.

Score-9
Nice mahogany color.
Suggestions-
Be aware of over thick over saucing.

bruce nickels
5/20/2013 01:00:53 am

Score/Reasons = 8. Nice color. good knife work. Well arranged. Too much bone is showing. Garnish is good. This could be a 9

Suggestions/Comments =

Jeff KCBS CBJ
5/20/2013 12:09:53 pm

score/reason 7 cuts could be a little more uniform, some bones showing some not makes it look sloppy

GeorgeB
5/21/2013 06:57:01 am

Score/Reason = 7, some have the bone showing while other don't. sauce looks goopy but that could be due to the photo angle. Darker edges on the bone ends gives the impression of hard bark.

Suggestions/Comments = a more uniforum appearance would be more appealing.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
