7 ends appear burnt/scorched

8 Very nice looking, smooth cutting, color excellent, sauce looks right, I'm ready to bite.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
6/10/2013 03:21:57 pm

Score/Reasons = 8; ribs look well prepared but there is too much sauce and I can't see the meat underneath the top.

Suggestions/Comments: Try to avoid making the ribs "shiny" versus having a sheen; subtle difference I know, but "shiny" makes it difficult to see what the meat/bark looks like.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
6/10/2013 03:32:13 pm

Score/Resons: 8 - meat appears heavily charred/burnt in places.

Suggestions/Comments: Use caution and don't put scorched/burnt pieces in the box for judging.

Score - 8

Comments - ribs in back appear very dark - color not uniform

Pete - KCBS

SCORE - 7 - above average, back 2 on left a tad overdone. I don't mind the exposed bones.

Don

7 - nice uniform cuts, looks like over sauced and sauce burned, not a tasty appearance

Jeff CBJ

6 burnt looking edges and back row looks black

ike, CBJ/KCBS

8, possibly a 9 in person. Nice arrangement and even sized ribs. Sauce looks okay but can't tell for sure if the outside is burned or not. Still a good looking bunch of ribs that I would love to taste.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
6/11/2013 12:19:57 am

Score/Reasons: 8 These are pretty uneven in finish and really dark (maybe better in person) and a bit oversauced.

Suggestions/Comments: Be careful with your sauce and maybe watch your ribs carefully on the grill and spin them to keep that charred end from happening.

Larry MCBJ

9 - I want a taste.

Score/Reasons = 8, Nice nlooking entry. Ends look a bit charred and appears that glaze is a little heavy.

Suggestions/Comments = None

score=8
would like to see the cut side of the meat.

an 8. Looks moist, good placement, even color but bottom pieces are narrower than top ones. I always get suspicious when ribs are substantially hidden from view that there may be flaws under the top row - like ragged edges or missing meat. I have to push back these thoughts and judge what I see. Also this arrangement is popular and a different layout can catch a judges attention in a positive manner.

Score/Reasons: 9. Super looking box! This would be a drool-starter for me!
Suggestions/Comments: A great example of what a box o' ribs should look like- Kudos to the cook! (The table captain will be sad not to get a taste tho.)

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 8, the color is uneven. The ribs in the back look to be darker color and the ends on the ones in the front are also of a darker color. The ribs also look over sauces giving it a slippery appearance.

Suggestions/Comments = suggest using less sauce. Also,, take care to present ribs that have the save coloring

Tom, CBJ PNWBA

8, Nice box, just wish I could see the rib in the upper left corner better. It looks darker than the rest. All the back ribs look different than the front ones.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8 Color looks uneven on the ribs.

Dan CBJ/KCBS

Score=9. Good color, uniform appearance, and the "right" amount of sauce.

8

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 7. Reasons: both ends of the rib appear overcooked and even burnt. It appears that the cook overdid these ribs and then tried to place a heavy coat of sauce in them to cover up the overcooking.

Bruce Heckart

8......I like the moist look of the meat, but looks a little over cooked on some pieces.

Nanette Heckart
6/11/2013 09:35:58 am

7, I liked the way the meat was arranged in the box, but the sauce is sloppy and the meat looks over cooked in some areas.

Tom
6/11/2013 10:30:30 am

Another nice box, however the ribs look slightly charred on the outside. Probable 8.

Greg CBJ/KCBS

8- Very good color, though a little uneven. Nice uniformity of ribs, look juicy. Great job!

8 Ribs too dark, irregular sauce

Matt KCBS CBJ

7 - Above average. Parts of the ribs look overcooked and slices aren't quite even.

8....Equal size ribs. Would have nice color if not for the chard sauce.

Work on the setting the sauce. Get a more even application.

Scrore/Reasons = 8, nice color except for the dark areas at the ends. I'd definately want to try one of these ribs.

Suggestions/Comments = looks like there is room for another row of ribs. A fuller box may look better. If possible, put the ribs with the dark ends on the bottom (back row) and show case the nicer ones like the rib in the front right.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Yum, me eat with gusto!! Only problem I see is the near burnt edges
but I'll get over it. I'll still go with a excellent 9, but in person it might drop to a very good 8.

Glenn - KCBS CTC, CBJ
6/14/2013 01:40:58 pm

7 - At first glance the box looks very appetizing but then I noticed a few flaws. The bottom left & bottom middle ribs looks burnt. Top left & middle also look burnt. Also some uneven sause on the ribs.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ and Comp Cook
6/17/2013 05:08:12 am

Score/Reason: I would score this box a 9. Ribs look yummy!
Suggestion: If you could get 2 more ribs in the box to fill it up it would make it look a little better.

bruce nickels

Score/Reasons = 8 nice color on rib, but ends slightly burnt. cant see the inside of the rib.

Suggestions/Comments = good sauce level and color.

Score/reason 6/7 uneven cuts, uneven saucing, ribs looks to be burnt Doesn't look appealing

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
