Score = 8

The box is quite appealing and the pieces are consistent in color and uniformity. The only drawback would be the finish glaze. It looks a little inconsistent in spots and not uniform across all of the pieces. all in all...a very good entry.

9 from me

David - CBJ/KCBS

Score - 9 - good color, nice looking box, glaze does not appear to be too thick

Suggestions - try and square ends of ribs off and keep same length. Minor point but some take away for that

Lorrie

9, ribs look moist and have a pleasing color
comment - the bottom edges could be trimmed to be more uniform

8 sauce looks a little heavy. Can't taste it from the pic, but I speculate the sauce would overpower the meat. Lighten it up a little. Definitely a 9. Regardless of what you hear about BBQ Not everyone likes a sweet saucy rib. Middle of the road BBQ will get you very far. It's has for us

Score 9. Theses ribs appear to be very well done with great meat. Close to being over sauced, but excellent looking ribs.

Score 8 - nice looking ribs, good color, would like to see the sides but very appetizing from the top. A little uneven on the sauce.

7.....Nice color and would improve if the sauce wasn't so goopy and uneven.

Line the bottom row of ribs so they match and are even.

9 - Nice!

Lorne Rae
7/7/2013 02:05:05 am

an 8. Good color, even sizing, good layout, look moist, good knife skills shown but placement a bit off as bottom of right rib partially overlaid by another rib.

Lee Tilton - CBJ

Score = 8 Nice clean cuts, pull back on bone is nice.

I would try to make sure the bottom of the ribs are cut straight.

Steve Ross

9 A very good looking box. Ribs are not perfectly even, but I have never once seen a completely even set of ribs.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
7/7/2013 03:38:36 am

Color, cuts, texture, sizes are all screaming excellent except for the alignment of the bottoms of the front row pieces.
Then it's a very good 8.

8, possibly a 9 in person. Good looking box of ribs and just enough sauce.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 9, beautiful box, nice color, can't wait to dig in.

Suggestions/Comments = Sauce is bordering on too much, but may just be the picture.

Score = 9: A few slight imperfections, but not enough to bring the score down.

Bill KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reasons = 9. Nice Looking Box

Suggestions/Comments = Maybe use less sauce.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
7/7/2013 06:57:26 am

Score/Reasons = 9, good color; not too much sauce; looks well-prepared, although I can't see the meat!

Suggestions/Comments = For placement, the 3rd rib from the left on the bottom could be swapped with the 2nd rib, which would give a more balanced appearance; also, for pictures, place the ribs so the meat (side) is visible. Just a thought ....

Score/Reasons = 8, good color (a bit blotchy) and look moist, pretty straight cuts. Just lacking anything to be excellent.

Suggestions/Comments = try to have ALL ribs the same way – right rib bottom is opposite of others.

Score/Reason: 9, I'm gonna give a bit of credit to what may be a bad pic. These look great with the exception of the glaze being a bit uneven and blotchy.

Comments: I'm not sure why this ended up with the look they have...hope its just the pic. But, the finish on them is blobby and uneven.

Score/Reasons: 9 - very nice looking box of ribs. No, the sauce & color is not automobile manufactured perfect finish in uniformity of color & evenness. But, so what?! It's a great lookig box of ribs.

Suggestions/Comments; None.

Matt KCBS CBJ
7/10/2013 01:45:00 pm

Score/Reasons = 9 - ribs look moist, not over cooked, good color

Suggestions/Comments = Maybe a bit heavy handed on the sauce, parsley looks just tossed in, and not tightly placed - I did NOT judge the garnish, but this is something I noticed after looking at the box a second time

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
