Score - 8 The addition of the shorter pieces at the top and bottom of the box takes away from the uniformity and balance of the presentation. Also, the 4 center ribs are a bit different in size and shape. Good color and glaze

Score/reasons: 9 Good looking box of ribs....mostly even cuts and not too much sauce.

Mike Cannon

6 - don't like orange color. don't want to see the edges, or, at least, glaze them. The box is overwhelmed by the ribs, narrow them.

8 burnt bits throw it off

Lorne Rae

6. Nice layout and look moist. Pieces are not all same size, some cuts are ragged and dark blotches detract from an otherwise nice color.

Moonpie KCBS CBJ
8/9/2013 02:34:14 am

Score 8... in truth I may even score it a 7. NICE Color. But not well cut. Certainly the lowest rib is of a much smaller size and from the picture the only cut side I can see looks dry. And though consistent saucing doesn't usually matter to me. The inconsistency here does.

Suggestion: I didn't score lower due to garnish but it does look bad and even though KCBS has been clear about ignoring garnish, a lot of folks were trained with "it's in the box, so you can judge it" and it isn't done well.

7 arrangement of the box , looks like the ribs are hanging somewhat out of the box.

Not enough greenery to be effective. Either use more or none.

8... Good color. Goopy sauce in spots. Top and bottom rib look out of place. Ribs look mismatched along the top.

Clean up the box. If you are going to use garnish take more time and do a better job. Consider a new arrangement for the ribs.

Score/Reasons: 7, The meat was unevenly cut and didn't seem to fit neatly in the box. I'm not sure why there are many black specks on the pieces but they make the meat look somewhat messy. On the good side, it looks like there's lots of meat and the meat looks juicy.

Shawn Higgins

Score = 7

The pieces look moist and tender. I don't see any shrinkage which indicates to me that the ends are trimmed and therefore if the ends are trimmed then the pieces should be uniform in size. It appears to be a little heavy on the glaze. Overall it's a good looking box.

Larry MCBJ

8 - Great color, only drawback is the irregular cuts.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
8/9/2013 04:25:53 am

Yikes, just not a good look at all! Sizes and shapes are all over the place. Cuts are ragged. Sauce is kinda hit and miss.
The spots of burnt whatever it is will get you during taste scoring, pick 'em off.
I'm in for a average 6, but below average 5 is within sight.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 8, Nice looking meaty ribs. Sauce appears too heavy in a spot or two.
Suggestions/Comments = Try to even up the slicing and sizes of the ribs. Add a bit more garnish to frame the ribs better and keep the sauce off the box inside edges.

Don

9 - uniform placement of product, good color, somewhat even across all pieces of meat, cuts good, box looks appealing

Justin M link

6 uneven knife cuts, sauce looks gloppy. A suggestion if your sanction allows more than the minimum to be turned in, do 8 ribs stacked 4x4 a lot better presentation

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8 Sauce is uneven, size of ribs uneven, cuts not straight, color uneven.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

8 - Nice looking ribs. Appear moist. A little more uniformity in size
(top and bottom are MUCH smaller) would have gotten a 9.

8 - The color is nice but the box lacks organization.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
8/9/2013 09:13:45 am

Score 8. Reasons: I believe this box would look more organized if the ribs were placed three bottom and three top. With the ribs in this configuration the box appears crowded and disorganized. I would also like to see the sauce applied more evenly to the ribs.

7 - the dark bits look unappetizing, and both the light color and lack of pull-back makes me worry they're undercooked and going to be tough.

Suggestions - overcome the perception of undercooked by showing off the smoke ring a bit more - can just barely see it on the one in front. Sauce looks nice, and I don't mind the irregular shapes if they look tasty!

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MIM & MBN Judge

Score/Reasons: 7 - the ribs have a nice glaze, which is a good start; but most of them are cut unevenly and several have ragged edges.

Comments/Suggestions: to slice ribs, stromgly suggest using a very sharp knife and pull only in one direction...stand ribs on the bone-ends with the bone side facing you, the place your slicer blade so that the handle is against the bone, then gently pull the blade toward you. If one pul doesn't get the blade all the way to the cutting board, lift the blade and repeat the one-way pull until you get all the way through to the board...OR use an electric knife to obtain smooth edges.

Score 9. Reasons: NOT over-sauced! Yay. Meat looks moist and inviting.

GeorgeB

Score/Reasons = 7, odd sized ribs with odd placement in box. uneven sauce, one has a bunch of sauce and another looks like the sauce got wiped off from handling.

Suggestions/Comments = more ribs that are approximately the same length would look nicer. I'm not opposed to varying sizes of ribs since that's how they are naturally on the rack, however, there should be some attempt made to present similar sized pieces.

Score/Reasons = 6, The meat looks a bit dry. The ribs are not cut evenly and the sauce was not applied in a uniform manner.

Suggestions/Comments = Suggest the ribs be on the smoker a little less time or wrapped a bit earlier to prevent them from drying out. Take care in cutting the ribs and pick ribs that are more even in size. When applying the sauce (Glaze) make sure it is applied evenly.

score/reason 7 nice color and shine, sauce is a little blotchy ,cuts need to be straighter and more even making a better presentation.

kris

score/reasons = 7 the various sizes of ribs and the sauce does not seem to be spread evenly heavy on some and very light on others some look overdone

Glenn- KCBS CBJ & CTC

7 - the ribs look meaty and possibly delicious tasting but the presentation needs work. I judged this past weekend (8/10) and the boxes used were smaller than usual. I can't tell by the picture if its a smaller box or the ribs are cut a little big. The sauce is a little uneven and the top and bottom ribs are not presented very well.

Tom - CMJ/KCBS, CBJ/MBN,NCBS,NCPC & comp cook
8/12/2013 05:59:55 am

Score/Reasons = 6, front rib looks very dry, black spots on left rib, next to left rib and back rib are VERY distracting. Rib sizes are too dissimilar. Sauce not evenly applied. Average box of ribs - nothing else.

Suggestions/Comments = Fix the above mentioned faults. Why bother with the garnish? Would probably look better without. Especially with the parsley stem sticking up in top left corner (NOT judging the garnish, but sure is distracting!).

Lorrie KCBS CBJ

8, looks like it would taste good, but the cuts are not even and it looks "awkward" in the box

Shawn-KCBS CBJ and Comp Cook
8/12/2013 08:53:43 am

Score/Reason: I would score this box an 8. Ribs have good color and look appealing!
Suggestion: It would look more uniform if the ribs were trimmed the same.

Jim Harmon - CBJ SBN/KCBS
8/12/2013 09:36:02 am

Score/Reasons = 8, The ribs are small and of odd shapes; the color is okay and the level of sauce is acceptable.

Comments/Recommendations = The placement of the ribs in the box is distracting and doesn't, in my opinion, present the ribs well.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
8/12/2013 02:04:29 pm

Score/Reason: 6 Not much is right with this box. The sauce is uneven, the cuts are really bad and the garnish while not judged detracts from the meat. There are also soot goobers on several pieces.

Comments: The color is ok but try to clean up the unappetizing stuff like the soot. You really need to pay attention to your cuts and make them much more even and try to apply your sauce evenly and not too heavy. Hope this helps!

Matt KCBS CBJ
8/13/2013 01:23:38 am

Score/Reasons = 7, would be an 8 if the cuts were a bit more even. The box looks a little hurried and sloppy. Meat looks to be above average, and the ribs are generously cut.

Suggestions/Comments = Make sure to wipe sauce off the inside of the box. Just a suggestion to add more parsley to present the ribs better. The devil is in the details.

8 unusual but nice box.

Steve R - KCBS CBJ
8/14/2013 02:26:09 am

This box earned an 8 by me. The ribs look very appealing and moist, but they also appear to be "too big" for the box ( it looks over crowded) and they don't look very uniform in size.

Jim S. NEBS KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 6, Box is very uneven. 4 judges getting Holywood cut ribs, and 2 getting scraps.

score / reasons = 7 Too light in color, not reasonably uniform in shape, sauce applied unevenly.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
