Score - 9 - the ribs are different lengths, but the symmetry and balance of the presentation are there. Good color and glaze and good box.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score/reason: Definitely a 9!! I love the presentation of the ribs and they look to be evenly (not over) sauced. Good job!

Mike Cannon

8 - the only thing I don't like is the 'alignment' of the groove thru the 'slab'. Looks artificial. Otherwise, very nice.

Score...9 Excellent Color. Looks Moist.

Suggestion: This box looks great to me, but in truth If it had more than the required 6 ribs it may look even better. Appearance is also about how badly we want something and an abundance makes us want something even more, subconsciously. But there is truly nothing wrong with that box. I'd give it a 9 every time.

9 nice box

a 9! Really nice layout. Even color and graduated sizing. Look moist. Good knife skills.

8 Very nice looking. Maybe a 9 if Looking at the box from the angle the judges would see it at the table.

9.... Nice looking box of ribs. Good color. Look moist. Not over sauced.

Any criticism would be nit picking. The Judges would get a better look at the ribs if they were placed crosswise.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Man, you have to take that extra minute to line up those ribs!
That one mistake chages what probably would have been a excellent 9 to a very good 8. If you don't want to show me your best, then I can't give you my best!
The color is good the cuts are good they look delicious.

Shawn Higgins

Score = 9

I really love this presentation and would love to get a bite to see if the food is as good as it looks. The color, uniformity, layout is superb. Glaze is a little thicker than I like, but it's consistent across all of the pieces.

Excellent submission. Note - in all of my judging, which includes this online forum and the KCBS sanctioned events, this is the first 9 I've ever given.

Larry MCBJ
8/9/2013 04:23:10 am

9 - Not over sauced, nice color, and all from one rack.

I'd still ask the TC about marking in regards to that seam.

Score/Reasons = 9, Nice looking ribs. Doesn't get much prettier than this.
Suggestions/Comments = Keep doing what you're doing!

9 - slightly too much sauce, nice color, really nice placement of meat in box, looks juicy and appealing

Score/Reasons = 9, I don't think there's much to say. Except my great disappointment at not being able to try one of these ribs.

9 Very clean and tight presentation box. Taste probably 7 I'm not a judge that likes a really saucy rib

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

8 - A little over sauced. But great looking box.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
8/9/2013 09:22:22 am

Score 9. Reason: these look like nice and meaty rims and even though the picture makes it slightly hard to judge these ribs online, I'm sure that the placement would be great if we were viewing the ribs at a contest. Suggestion: Please do not put any more sauce on the ribs than you have on this box. If they were covered with any more sauce than these ribs I would consider them over sauced.

Solid 9 - a bountiful layout that shows confidence in the whole rack, look juicy, great color.

Normally would want to see a little more pull-back (underdone), but in this case that perception is mitigated by the other factors leading me to look forward to a tender bite. That's another score... ;-)

9 perfect box! Beautiful color and looks delicious ! Garish is not to be judged but it frames your ribs perfectly. Looks like its all from one rack too. Really nice example of how a box should look

Score/Reason: 9 - nice looking box. Can't tell from the pic whether the sauce is too heavy, so beneefit of doubt goes to cook.

Suggestions/Comments: Don't be heavy-handed with the sauce. More isn't always better.

Score 8. Reason: Very attractive presentation but a little heavy on the sauce. Less is more.

Score/Reasons = 8, nice looking arrangement and nice color on the ribs. Would have given a 9 if it wasn't for the groove running down the middle of the rack. I found that to be a distraction.

Suggestions/Comments = perhaps trimming some of the excess top meat off the bones will make them look nicer by removing the groove.

Score/Reasons = 9, The ribs really look impressive. I like the look cutting the ribs from the same slab gives. The ribs look good with the way they are sauced, evenly and not over sauced.

Suggestions/Comments = no suggestions except keep up the great presentation.

score/reason 8 good color and shine, sauce is getting a little on the thick side, ribs could be aligned a little straighter bottom three ribs are shifted to one side and not straight with the upper 3 ribs. would love to taste these ribs.

8 - Very nice lloking box. Ribs sit nicely on the garnish. I would have tried to get ribs more of the same size which then I would have given a 9.

Score/Reasons = 9, looks great! moist, meaty, sauced well, good color, good cuts - looks VERY appetizing!

Suggestions/Comments = Not much to suggest except to possibly put them across the box instead of front to back.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
