Score = 7. The meat looks a little dark and the finish is a little heavy. I like the cut on pieces and would like to see what it would taste like.

7, irregular shape and a bit dark

8 entirely too much sauce but ribs look evenly cut and well presented.

Mike Cannon
7/28/2013 08:08:18 am

7 - too wet. don't like the bone showing in the middle of the rib.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, REp; MBN & MIM Judge
7/28/2013 08:19:00 am

Score/Reasons: 8 - nice presentation for this box of ribs. Nice to see more than the minimum 6 required. Sauce, however, appears heavy and gloppy. Sauce also is uneven on the two left top ribs.

Suggestions/Comments: Consider backing off on the sauce a bit, apply it evenly on each rib. Also, consider reversing the ribs so that the bone is down and not visible or else cover the bone tips with sauce, too.

9 looks great has pretty shine to it

very standard looking box, but attractive

David CBJ/KCBS
7/28/2013 08:47:10 am

Score - 8 - Sauce or glaze is way too heavy and takes away from the presentation.

Comments - this did not affect my score but personally, I think the presentation looks better with the exposed rib ends to the bottom intead of to the top.

Bruce

appearance score of 8, I like the glass look. I would have gave it a 9 if it wasn't for the uneven ribs. I like the ribs to be uniformed.

Lorne Rae
7/28/2013 09:05:56 am

a 7. Even color and good popular layout. Look moist. However, knife cuts on second left rib not parallel and they all look overly sauced.

George

7 - Looks oversauced.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
7/28/2013 09:36:22 am

Score 8 Reason: I'm sure there are some great looking rib with good color hiding under the BBQ sauce. I would just like to be able to see them. Suggestion: Lighten up on the sauce.

Great looking box, nice glaze. I would give this a 9 for sure.

Mike S.; KCBS MCBJ

Score/Reasons = 7 (maybe an 8); Too heavily sauced

Suggestions/Comments = Poor photo, and the glare of the flash makes this entry hard to judge. The arrangement of the box looks excellent.

8.......Nice color and shine. Meat pulled back from the bone. Goopy, uneven sauce.

The ribs are way over sauced. Sauce is to compliment the meat not cover it up.

Judy Mayberry KCBS CBJ
7/28/2013 01:29:05 pm

8. Nice to see bone tips showing, but super heavy glaze makes it impossible to see the rib underneath. Looks like overpowering glaze.

Matt KCBS CBJ
7/28/2013 02:07:34 pm

Score/Reasons = 8 - Very good, maybe a tad heavy handed with the sauce, and they do look a tad darker than ribs that I would score a 9.

Suggestions/Comments = I would make sure to pay attention to making straight cuts and lining the ribs up nicely in the box.

Don
7/28/2013 02:35:12 pm

8 - too much sauce otherwise it would be a 9. I like that you showed meat drawn up on the bones and your cuts look clean. I find the product to look appealing.

Score = 8 Color, Cuts and Sauce are uneven

GeorgeB
7/28/2013 09:29:49 pm

Score/Reasons = 8, The photo is obviously not one of the best but... the color is a bit dark and some ribs have bones exposed and a few do not.

Suggestions/Comments = apply sauce more evenly. It appears a bit glompy in spots.

Frank KCBS MCBJ TC

Score/Reasons = 8, picture is a little dark so score may be different in person. A bit heavy on the sauce.

Suggestions/Comments = none

Tom - CMJ-KCBS; CBJ-MBN/NCBS/NCPC & comp cook
7/29/2013 01:31:21 am

Score/Reasons = 7, looks very moist, but too much sauce and not evenly spread. (photo quality won't allow me to tell much more)

Suggestions/Comments = Lighten up on the sauce, the dark sauce is okay ("judge as presented"), but spread more evenly - looks too gloppy. Bones sticking out on bottom layer should be more even - I see four different amount of bone sticking out from the four ribs (can't tell on the top ribs too much).

Shawn-KCBS CBJ and Comp Cook
7/29/2013 02:06:06 am

Score/Reason: I would score this box a 8. Ribs look good!
Suggestion: You may want to cut back a little on the sauce and try to trim a little more uniform.

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
7/29/2013 02:24:13 am

Score/Reasons: 9, Ribs look great.

Suggestions/Comments: The amount of sauce on this entry is toward the "too heavy" side, but giving the cook the benefit of the doubt. Watch out though, because other judges may not be as forgiving.

Pauline Corbett
7/29/2013 02:46:44 am

The ribs look just good enough to eat. They have a nice mahagony color and are shiny. I would score this box a 9

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
7/29/2013 03:35:36 am

Score/Reasons = 7, the ribs are simply over sauced which makes them look unappetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = cut back on the sauce and allow the ribs to show through.

Ike, CBJ/KCBS

Score/reasons: 8, Nice looking box of ribs...enen sized and look to be cooked okay. Discounted from a 9 due to heavy sauce.

7/29/2013 04:57:16 am

SCORE/REASONS: 8 - The bones are sticking out a little too much and the cuts are a bit uneven.

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: Comment only: These are nicely sauced and look tasty!

Pete KCBS
7/29/2013 05:27:25 am

Score 8 - Very saucy but looks pretty good, lots of meat per rib and nice color.

Comment - After sampling this one I'd be working hard to keep the sauce off my scorecard.

Steve R - KCBS-CBJ

Scored a 7. The ribs are a very nice size, but way too much sauce - by looking at this entry, you can't even tell how moist it might be or the appearance of the meat itself.

8 - Appear to be heavily sauced.

9. I like it. I'd want to eat if I saw that in front of me

However, I know some judges who would score that lower due to too much sauce.

Nice full box, cuts look clean. Sauce is a little heavy and poorly applied. It's important to have a even glaze.
I'll do a very good 8.

8 - meat looks moist, but slices are not uniform, with some bones showing some not, and the sauce looks blotchy -- heavy in some spots, light in others

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score/reason 8 straighter cuts and aligned better at the bottom would have mad a better appearance

chaz d KCBS CBJ
8/3/2013 06:21:16 am

Score/Reasons: 7 These look way oversauced to me but what really caught my eye was a spot on the first rib on the front left that looked like it had a thumbprint in the sauce.

Comments: If you are going to sauce heavily make sure its even and attractive, otherwise these look pretty good.

Jim S. KCBS CBJ NEBS
8/5/2013 02:02:29 am

Score/Reasons = 8, A little too saucy for me. Watch out for the smudges, left side top row. A pitmaster who was putting in the effort for sure.

Suggestions/Comments = I to have felt the frustrations of having to cut into multiple racks of ribs to just make turn in. I nice trick is to align the tops of the ribs, and slice the bottom edge to make them look uniform in length. Then use you greens to camoflage to cut edge. (Just align the top edges of the back row. They are mostly hidden, so not as critical)

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
