Score = 6

Pieces look uniform in shape and color. The split near the end of the bone may indicate that the rib is a little over done. I don't like the to pieces turned on the side. It's personal preference but for me tends to take away from the presentation.

Nice color, sauce not too heavy, but just no wow factor. Maybe the two turned on their sides, just didn't grab me.

I would score this box a 9.

Suggestion: Try not to get the bones so charred.

At a recent contest, I was asked by several cooks how I'd thought judges would react to no garnish. I told them that the rules say garnish is optional and that judges are to judge the meat and not the garnish, unless, of course, it is illegal garnish. However, I also told them that while I though most judges understood this, I could not promise that all judges did.

I would give this box an 9 and am interested in reading how the other judges react.

7 Box is nor neat . ribs have a mark in a line were the sauce rubbed the box . The box doesn't look full enough . Color looks good .this'd site jumps around while I type . I can't see what I'm writing , so I can't correct ...sorry

They used a poor selection of ribs to turn in. Unsure about the color.

Score/Reasons = 8; dark picture, but sauce is a little gloppy and not evenly applied; also, the placement of the rib on the right is out of line with the rib on the left;

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 9. May be lower in person. Sauce looks a little uneven and ribs looked dark. Hard to tell due to the exposure. Neaten up the saucing on the bones before turn in.

Suggestions/Comments = table captain happy with allthose ribs!

PS

This box is an 8. The ribs appear to have holes in them. The color is nice. the main ribs are cut evenly, but the side ribs are uneven.

8 - would have been a 9 if the two sideways ribs had been left out.

Score/Reasons: 9 - nice looking box of ribs. Good color, Judiciously applied sauce...not thick & gloppy.

Suggestions/Comments: I don't believe I'd change a thing. And, no, I don't miss the garnish at all.

7 Looks a little dark, nice shine. 2 ribs on the side distract from the appearance.

Score 9 - I almost scored this an 8 because I am not sure this is completely cooked, but bumped it for being well organized in the box without the greenery.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

7 - A little over sauced. Missing meat and shorter ribs on the sides don't add to the overall appearance. But a good looking box otherwise.

Going to assume the competition did not require garnish. If that's the case I'd score this a 8. I like the uniformity, the color is excellent, the presentation makes it look appetizing and juicy - just a touch too much sauce.

score/ reason 8 meat looks tender but some of tops are a little overdone

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 9. The ribs look great, but any more sauce or darkness on the top I would have deducted one point as the meat is almost covered by the dark sauce.

Score/Reasons = 9, looks great.
Suggestions/Comments = Some lettuce under the ribs would make them look even better.

Dennis McLemore CBJ KCBS

Score 9 - Nice color and not covered with sauce.

Suggest that the two side ribs be evened up. Did not affect my score, but some judges may mark down due to unbalanced appearance.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8: Photo is a little dark so I can't get a good sense of the color, in person this probably would be a 9.

Comments: This box shows you do not need garnish for a great looking box! You might try flipping the ribs around 180 degrees and put the bone ends down to see how that looks.

I give this box a 9. Meat looks moiste and the ribs are a little dark, but I give that to the photo. Cuts look nice and even

Score/Reasons = 8; poor quality photo, it may be a 9. Can not tell if sauce was applied evenly, or if it is too excessive. All the ribs look very uniform, and each row looks like the ribs were cut from the same rack. I like that at least two ribs are shown with the meat exposed.

Suggestions/Comments:
Better quality photo would have been nice.

Score/Reasons = 7, the ribs are rather dark and appears to be over sauced. The side ribs are not lined up evenly

Suggestions/Comments = The dark color could be due to the sauce. Less sauce would allow the ribs to be viewed better, less is more! Make sure the ribs are evenly lined up.

Matt KCBS CBJ

score/reason 7 appears to be a little dark in color, sauce looks a little uneven, could be a little more uniform

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
