Score = 8

Pieces are uniform and I prefer the Hollywood cut. Spacing is nice but the color is little dark. I like the bark and the color of the meat and like the glaze even though it's a little heavy.

I've learned not to be so focused on exact uniformity but this one just didn't do it for me. When the garnish looks better than what's being presented, it's a problem.

I would score this box a 9. Great color and amount of sauce.

Suggestion: Try to put more ribs in the box to fill it up.

7 - Ribs are uneven and arrangement does not look appetizing. Don't understand the curved cutting of the two center ribs.

Dan KCBS CTC, MCBJ

8 looks like some scorching and gloppy sauce

Ike, KCBS CBJ

7 possibly an 8 in person.

Outside of the ribs looks to be almost burnt.

Score/Reasons = 7; Now wow factor; ribs look okay but don't make me want to eat them;

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 9. A little dark and some folks will quibble about the different sizes, but appears to be excellent ribs.

Suggestions/Comments = None

Score box an 8. The ribs are unevenly cut. They appear to be overlyt sauced and silghtly burnt.

Nike Cannon

7 - dark - don't like to see the side of the ribs.

joe

8 - Entry looks very good, would suggest the sauce is very dark and uneven. Sauce appears thick like jam.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
10/30/2013 03:44:34 am

Score/Reasons: 7 - nice color and judicious use of sauce, but the spartan layout and the mutant sickle-shaped ribs cause major distractions to appearance.

Suggestions/Comments: Find a new rib supplier. A full box, with the pieces arranged together make a much better appearance IMHO.

6 took dark, dry looking and the arrangement is not attractive.

Even up the garnish.

8 - A little over sauced and uneven pieces, but good looking box.

Thomas Paccioretti

I'd score this a 7. Garnish is nice, color a bit dark, sizes are not uniform, sauce looks good and the entry looks appetizing.

score/reason 8 sauce looks like in globs

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
10/30/2013 07:51:01 am

Score 8. The dark meat/sauce, size of the ribs, and the box layout does not make this an attractive box.

GeorgeB
10/30/2013 07:57:11 am

Score/Reasons = 6, the ribs appear to be cut oddly and the one in the front looks a bit dry. Some of the others look like the sauce burnt a bit.

Suggestions/Comments = Use more uniform sized ribs and place more meat in the box.

Dennis McLemore CBJ KCBS
10/30/2013 08:00:20 am

Score 8 A little too dark, looks overcooked or over sauced. Bottom piece looks dry.

Suggest that more uniform ribs be submitted and they be placed closer together to give more of a rack appearance.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

7. Uneven appearance

Larry MCBJ

8 - Uneven sauce.

David - CBMJ/KCBS

Score - 7 - size and shape all over the wall. Need more meat than garnish showing.

Score = 7: Cuts look ragged and uneven. Size isn't very uniform. Color isn't uneven. The overall effect of this makes the box look sloppy.

RandyE

I give this box a 7. Would like to give it a 6.5. Do not like the varoius sizes, and spreading them out seems to hurt even more. Uneven cuts

7 - No pull back on bones makes me think underdone and tough, combined with dark color makes me think scorched.

Score/Reasons = 6; leaning towards a 5. The ribs do not look appealing. Sauce is very dark, and a few ribs show that the sauce was not applied evenly. The odd configuration just draw attention that each rib was poorly sliced. One rib is half hidden under the garnish.

Suggestions/Comments:
Maybe not space the ribs apart so much. Pay greater attention to details when it comes to saucing the ribs

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
11/2/2013 11:02:45 pm

Score/Reasons = 8, The ribs are too dark which does not allow the rib meat to show through. These ribs do not cause me to really want them and they look similar to other ribs presented.

Suggestions/Comments = Suggest user other sauces that would distinguish these ribs from other. Use less saucer.

Matt KCBS CBJ
11/3/2013 10:56:46 am

Score/Reasons = 6, overcooked, crooked cuts, sauce is blotchy

Suggestions/Comments = I suggest trying to find racks of ribs that have nice straight bones and cut VERY carefully.

Jeff KCBS CBJ
11/5/2013 11:55:07 am

score/reason 7 looks over done and dark in color, cuts could be straighter and ribs more uniform in sizes

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
