Score = 9

Box looks great. I love the color, size, and uniformity of the pieces in the presentation. Looks moist and an even glaze across all of the pieces. I would love to try this box...I bet it tastes as good as it looks.

score/reasons = 9
I had to look hard (old eyes) to realize there were 8 ribs, not 4. Nice color, lightly sauced, just right.

I would score this box a 9.

Suggestion: Try to stack the ribs evenly in the box with no gaps.

9 nice box

Nice arrangement and ribs have just enough sauce to make me want to dig in.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Scores/Reasons = 8; nice looking ribs, sauce is even, making the ribs "shine" at just the right level; the rib in the upper right is out of line with the rest on top.

Suggestions/comments = Pay attention to placement; it can mean the difference between an 8 and a 9.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 9. Nice looking ribs.

Suggestions/Comments = Careful on the arrangement. You have a gap in the middle of the bottom four ribs. Some of the ribs appear larger than others, try for a bit more uniformity.

PS

score 9. The double row of ribs looks nice, evenly cut. They appear not to be overly sauced and they have a shiny appearance. They do look dellicious in the box.

Michael Cannon

7 - little uneven and pale. can see garnish between ribs

9 - excellent, nice color, nice presentation, even sizes, excellent.

Take a little more time to clean up the box and evenly arrange the garnish.

Score/Reasons: 8 - Nice looking ribs, good color, not oversauced. I found the gap in the underlayer of ribs plus the garnish stem protruding onto the underlayer of ribs distracting.

Suggestions/Comments: Fix those two minor flaws and you'll get a 9 from me.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

9 - Nice layout, meat not hiding behind the garnish. Appear to be moist. Excellent box.

At first it looked like a DQ, only four pieces, but closer inspection revealed eight. I'll score it a 8. I would like to see better attention to the garnish, looks at bit sloppy. I like the color, it looks appetizer and the sauce is not too thick, however I would prefer a smoother lacquered look.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 8. This is a difficult picture to judge from and may score higher if I was able to see more of the ribs. That being said the apparent heavy spices and the box layout caused me to deduct one point.

Score/Reasons = 9, color and size looks nice. Sauce looks good too. Full box of meat.

Suggestions/Comments = not much to comment on except perhaps a little more care with placement in the box.

score/reason 8 for most part looks good but does not look laid in the box very consistant. that would be my score and then I think later it would change to a 1 because there are not enough pieces in the box

Dennis McLemore CBJ KCBS

Score = 9 Nice color, good lay out of ribs.

Suggestion > Close the gap in the top group of ribs so that no green is showing between the ribs.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

9.

Suggestions/Comments: Arrange the meat in the back row so that the ribs are as close together as the front row (nitpicking). :)

Score = 8: Cuts are a little uneven and box looks a little sloppy with gap in the middle of the back row.

I am going to give this one a 9 I like the color and the ribs look nice. The saw tooking across the top and bottom is even and doesn't take away from the look of the box.

8 - Nice color, sauce makes them look tasty, just not able to get a read on the tenderness.

I either need some pull back on the bone or a side view to give me a sense of tenderness.

Score/Reasons = 9, but the bottom row needs more detail. Overall nice looking ribs.

Suggestions/Comments:
None.

Score/Reasons = 9, the ribs could be lined up better and are too shiny. The presentation looks like the other ribs submitted during a contest.

Suggestions/Comments = Ensure the ribs are lined up better. The ribs on top have a space between them. Suggest user less glaze, shiny is not natural. Change to make your ribs look different from others submitted.

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score/reason 8 dark in color, not uniform in size and cuts should be straighter

Matt KCBS CBJ
11/6/2013 01:33:54 pm

Score/Reasons = 8, not too heavily sauced, good color, make sure cuts are straight and clean

Suggestions/Comments = None.

8. Line them up better on top and keep the garnish off the ribs and you get a 9 next time. Looks pretty good.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
