Score = 7

I like the presentation but the glaze looks a little uneven and pieces look lite in color.

I give it a 7, the box seams a little empty. Too much room to the left and right, maybe 4 bones per level would have helped. Color is good, buthte ribs are saws touthed in the row and make them lok different in sizes.

Dan KCBS CTC, MCBJ

7 cuts and color uneven

David - MCBJ/KCBS
11/18/2013 11:44:14 pm

Score - 8 uneven rib length takes away from presentation. Also too much garnish showing

PS
11/19/2013 12:19:33 am

Unfortunately the picture is very dark. Score an 8. The ribs look shiny and not oversauced. Box could be a 9 if the picture was better

Mike Cannon

7 - ends showing in the middle - box needs to be filled better.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
11/19/2013 12:54:35 am

Score/Reasons = 9. May be lower in person. Ribs look appetizing but may have a bit too much sauce - or it may be the picture. I am not a fan of the arrangement and you will be marked down by some judges.

Comments: Neaten up the arrangement and try for more uniform ribs. Some judges will mark down for this.

Score/Reasons = 8/Ribs look delicious; nice color; appears to be a bit too much sauce, but it's hard to tell; the ribs are of different sizes, which was distracting! Otherwise, good looking ribs!

Suggestions/Comments = Try to select ribs of the same size.

Larry MCBJ
11/19/2013 01:01:32 am

8 - Uneven cuts and a couple look like the sauce has burned.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
11/19/2013 02:15:32 am

Score/Reasons = 8, The ribs are a bit dark and a bit over sauced.

Suggestions/Comments = The dark color could be caused by the sauce which caramelized. Make sure the ribs are not over done and that the top layer of meat does not come off in one piece when one bites the rib. Use less sauce. .

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
11/19/2013 03:13:44 am

Score/Reasons: 8 - nice looking, not oversauced ribs.

Suggestions/Comments: Too much visible green turf, IMHO. One almost could ask one's self, are we judging parsley or ribs? Add at least one more row, maybe two, of ribs. A full box makes a better appearance.

Score/Reasons = 7, uneven cuts & lengths

8 - Looks very nice. Too uneven slices, too uneven colors, too much sauce for a 9.

Old Goat

8 Ribs are small, look lost in the box. Color is good, though I am sure a couple or more ribs would improve the presentation.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

8 - Not overly sauced, but samples are uneven. Good looking box.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
11/19/2013 06:28:30 am

Score 8. Nice ribs. I would just like to see more even pieces and the shine/glare make these ribs hard to see. I would hope that it is due to the picture and that they are actually not as glossy as they appear.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
11/19/2013 06:38:30 am

Score = 7: Size and color of the ribs is uneven.

Comments: Even though you have met the rules in providing 6 ribs, the box will look much better with a couple of more ribs in it. Also might try flipping the ribs 180 degrees and put the bone ends down in the front. Take care in cutting your ribs and try to make them as uniform as possible. The eye likes symmetry and we eat with our eyes first.

I would score this box a 9. Glaze looks very nice!

Suggestion: If you have some extra ribs, try to fill out the box more with meat.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
11/19/2013 10:20:53 am

Score: 8 The size/shape/color is pretty uneven.

Comments: Be careful with your cuts. These are really really uneven. Good looking sauce but the color is also pretty uneven across the pieces.

Dennis M

Score 9

Some judges might mark down because ribs are not uniform in length.

Score/Reasons = 8, looks moist, but sauce doesn't look spread evenly. Ribs are too dissimilar in size to be excellent.

Suggestions/Comments = placing the short ribs on the bottom layer would have hidden them and made this appear better.

Ike, KCBS CBJ
11/20/2013 11:55:48 am

Score this box a 9.

Bones sticking out are a little distracting but otherwise the ribs look great!

BlueSmoke KCBS CBJ/COMP COOK

6....Uneven color. Look under cooked. Ribs not lined up. Sauce looks good. Ribs different sizes.

Spread the ribs out to make the box look more balanced. Sauce the bare bones.

Matt KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 8, Sauce is uneven, cuts aren't straight.

Suggestions/Comments = None

This box looks great ! Scored a 9. Looks perfectly centered in the box and a neat presentation over the garnish. One thing that has me puzzled : looks like there's a small rib in front off to the side ?

Rod Lively

I'm gonna say a 7 the pieces are a little uneven the one on the top right just jumps out at you.

Jake

score ....8

I will say right off the bat bones are not burnt. glossy. and look moist. the only thing I think bad I can say is the color is not the same all the way through.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
