Score = 8

I really like this box. The pieces look moist and tender and have a nice color. The pieces look meaty too! Pieces are almost uniform in size and the pieces to the left don't look like there was as much shrinkage as the ones on the right. Leads me to believe that the pieces came from different cuts. Overall...I would love to taste this box.

7 very dark appears scorched

David - MCBJ/KCBS
11/18/2013 11:46:32 pm

Score - 8 Ribs too dark and unevenly colored.

Comments - might consider stacking them rather than cramming them in single line. Might make it look better

PS

Score an 8. The ribs look a tad overdone. They are not oversauced

Mike Cannon

8 - bones don't look good.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
11/19/2013 01:00:24 am

Score/Reasons = 8, some ribs look a little too dark.

Suggestions/Comments = Try for more uniformity in the size of the ribs in the box. Neaten up the garnish as well. Some judges will mark down for these issues.

7... good color, but looks dry and over cooked.

Suggestion. If your ribs aren't arranged evenly or aren't really uniform then staggering them can help present them and lessen the obviousness of the non-uniform shape and uneven placement.

7 - Looks grainy and uneven cuts.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
11/19/2013 02:21:44 am

Score/Reasons = 6, The ribs are too dark and burnt. The burnt sauce makes the ribs to appear to be over done.

Suggestions/Comments = Decrease the amount of sauce used and maybe do not keep it on the grill so long. The dark/black color may be burnt sugars in the sauce and caused the ribs to appear to be over done.

Score/Reasons = 7, uneven cuts and glaze looks gritty

9 - I like the presentation, I would like to have one now.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
11/19/2013 03:27:49 am

Score/Reasons: 7, maybe an 8 in person. The meat part of the ribs looks really good to me. They have a natural look about them and they're not oversauced and the sauce has been "set." However, the zig-zag line of the ribs' lower edge strikes my eye like a bad music chord/harmony strikes one's ears. Also, the top edge of the ribs, some have bones exposed, some have no bones at all. Also, the box appears unbalanced, in that there's a lot of green space at top & bottom but appear over crowded on each side.

Suggestions/comments: Even up the greenery so that the the garnish is basically unform around all sides of the box. Even up the rows of ribs on top & bottom and put all the bones on top or all on bottom to avoid the visually discordant mix of some meat/some bones.

Jim H - CBJ SBN KCBS

Score/Reasons = 8/A little dark but nice looking ribs; exposed bones on the right don't match the others; otherwise a 9.

8 Too much bark.

8- Not overly sauced, samples are uneven, color seems dark - could be the photo.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 7: Ribs look very dark in this photo like they might be charred a little which is not appetizing.

Score 7. These ribs appear overcooked and with a burnt sauce which does not appeal to me.

I would score this box an 8. These ribs look very nice!

Suggestion: Try to not get them so dark in color and trim more uniform

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
11/19/2013 10:26:08 am

Score: 7 The pieces are very uneven in size and color is a bit dark and sooty looking.

Comment: I REALLY wanted to like this box. I love it when the bones look like a rack. However the pullbacks kill that look. The finish is also pretty dark They do look really edible just not up to snuff for competition.

Score 9

Box looks a little crowded. You may want to see how stacking them as two rows of three would look.

Tom - CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS & comp cook
11/20/2013 03:39:09 am

Score/Reasons = 8, looks very good, but a couple items off from excellent. align all the bone ends the same direction to help look the same. sauce doesn't look like it is spread evenly.

Suggestions/Comments = Looks scrunched in the box, layer the ribs for better placement appearance.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 8.

Good looking ribs but appear to be over done.

7....Color may be a little dark. Ribs uneven across the top. Chunk missing out of the 4th rib from the right on the bottom. A gobber on the second rib from the left.

Sauce the bones sticking out along the bottom.

Matt KCBS CBJ
11/21/2013 12:11:57 pm

Score/Reasons = 7, meaty and thick looking spares, but sauce is over cooked and presentation is a bit on the sloppy side

Suggestions/Comments = I bet these ribs tasted awesome, they are big, but more attention to detail is needed.

7 maybe an 8, I like the char but the one on the far right seems to be a little over done also the pieces could stand to be a little more even in size.

Steve R - KCBS CBJ
11/24/2013 11:26:01 am

The three ribs on the right side look uniform in size and appearance - the 3 to the left do not. And the entry could have been centered in the box a little bit better. But overall the ribs look great, so I scored an 8.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
