Score 9 - I really like to see a full slab not selected ribs.

Mike Cannon

8 - like to see the edge sauced

Mike Cannon

9 - nice

9 appears to be a contiguous slab which is different

Garnish is well done

Score/Reasons: 9. Great looking ribs.

Suggestions/Comments: May take a hit from some because the ribs are not uniform in size.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
1/22/2014 01:23:34 pm

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: 9. Would like to see more of these ribs, but from this angle, a 9. Sauce is at the upper limits

SUGGESTIONS: Some judges will not care for this presentation as they like more symmetry.

GeorgeB - KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons=9, love the color. Just makes me want to grab one now.

Suggestions=maybe choose ribs from the rack that are more uniform in length. Some judges may ding you for the shorter ribs.

Larry MCBJ

9 - Nice color, doesn't appear over sauced, and I want some!

JohnnyY/CBJ,NCPC,KCBS,NCBS
1/22/2014 08:03:49 pm

8 - I question why the cook would submit such an odd shape product. Uniformity and symmetry is the order.

Note: Several ribs on the far right may not have the same texture as the others because they are smaller, closer to the end of the rack, and subjected to more heat during the cooking process. The edge of the first rib on the right shows evidence of this.

Tiffany KCBS CBJ-CTC

9 - The ribs look tasty...

I'd just be hoping I wasn't the judge that got the smallest one!

8 i prefer to see ribs of equal length.

George

7 - Too much variation in size.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 9.

Without being able to look at the side of the ribs these look delicious!

Score 9
Interesting box with the ribs graduating in size. Very nice presentation

Mike-CBJ/KCBS
1/23/2014 12:07:20 am

7- Color looks good; nice glaze but perhaps a little too heavy. I understand the ribs are all from the same rack but the reduction in the size of the ribs and the lack of uniformity in the thickness reduces the score.

Matt KCBS CBJ
1/23/2014 12:10:46 am

Score/Reasons = 9, Great looking ribs, all from the same rack, good color

Suggestions/Comments = Maybe just a tiny touch heavy on the sauce is all, but didn't take away from my overall score

RandyE

I give this one an 8. I feel it has too much sauce, and is really dark.

8 very nice looking box

Score/Reasons = 8 Nice looking ribs, nice color, moist looking, nice shine.

Suggestions/Comments If using garnish frame the meat evenly, otherwise it throws the whole box off.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
1/23/2014 01:28:47 am

Score/Reasons = 9, box looks good.

Suggestions/Comments = if anything just make sure all of the meat is sauced evenly. The upper top of the ribs on the left appear not to be sauced. This could be due the photo.

Tom - CMJ/CBJ et al...

Score/Reasons = 8, looks good, I like that it is all from one rack (obviously), but the different sizes of the ribs hurts a bit. Shiny, but lacks a little for a 9 from me.

Suggestions/Comments = a layered look might be better, especially to make all the ribs look the same size.

Bobby Whitefield

Nice color with a uniform glaze. Pieces are well presented. My only suggestion, if you are going to garnish, make it uniform all the way around the meat. I would probably give it an 8.

No Score. I cannot judge this box based on this picture due to the fact that I cannot even determine what this entry is, if the meat is legal, ect.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 9, Great looking ribs.

Comments: Even though the size varies greatly, the box is arranged so that it is symmetrical and pleasing to the eye. The color is almost a little too dark, but that might be from the photo.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Comment: 9/Great looking ribs, nice color, scrumptious looking. I especially like the congruent and symmetrical way in which they are displayed in the box.

7- I am tempted to give it an 8 but just could not do it. 7.5 maybe. The color is very nice. The size of the cuts is a negative. It looks like a decorator laid it out. Some one is going to get the short rib.

9, I love that is from the same rack, color is great

8- Color is good, but is a little uneven. The ribs look moist. Very good looking rib box.

Like the slab look. Color is great, well sliced, not over sauced.
I'm happy.
Here's your excellent score of 9.

9...Neat presentation. Nice color with a good glaze. Nicely cut ribs.

Lighten up a bit on the sauce.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ/CTC

Score: 8

Comments: I personally love it when people use a single slab like this. A lot of judges will hit for the uneven sizes but this looks really natural to me. The only thing that dropped the score was sauce was slightly uneven and there are some uneven cuts but I really like this box!

Would get a higher score if all ribs were the same length or at lease close

8. This box would be spectacular if it was ribs 4 through 9 rather than 1 through 6.

Rod Lively

7 would be a 9 if the ribs wer closer to the same size, man the color is perfect tho.

joe

8 - Ribs are sliced into wedges, rib 3 and 6 from the left are a thick cut, the others are smaller. I really like the color and the appearance and was wanting to give a nine.

Glenn, KCBS CBJ &CTC
1/27/2014 07:58:16 am

8 - A different presentation which I give credit for. The ribs look very good. Very nice color and sauce. I'd be willing to bet however that as the box goes around the table the ribs will be taken from left to right.

JeffT - CBJ & TC/KCBS
1/27/2014 09:45:49 am

Score 7 - Box arrangement is not balanced. Rib have a nice color, but should have picked 6 more equal in size. Smaller ribs look like they would be dry as they appear a little too caramelized.

DJ Martin KCBS/CBJ

Score/Reasons = 8 A little over-sauced after the cook.

Suggestion: try to fill up the box with meat.

BBQ Critics: Compare your scores with other judges. Have fun and learn for ways to improve your scores. If you are way off from the average of these scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
