Comment: Nice looking box. Sauce in uneven, especially on side pieces.

Score: 9--good looking box; nice evenly cooked ribs-no excess sauce, no excess garnish. turned ribs shows confidence in rib cook quality coming from the cook. an excellent box, looking great, and making me salivate...

9 - Although I'm not a big fan of ribs on their sides, the box looks good and the ribs look tasty and well cooked.

9 - Great presentation. I like the fact that you chose to chance a new look from the norm.

Score: 9.

Great looking box of ribs! Sauce is uneven but that also allows you to see the actual unsauced meat. Good job!!

I give this one an 8. Like the look of the ribs, but not even. Thinness of the ribs not a good look when turned up.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 9, great looking meat, great color.

Suggestions/Comments = Some judges will pick on a lack of uniformity size.

Score/Reasons 9 Nicely done. Looks tender and tasty.

8 interesting arrangement

Shawn Higgins

Score = 8

Nice presentation. I like the two side pieces turned to show the smoke ring. It's a really clean presentation, almost sterile in a sense. For that reason, I give it an 8.

Score 9. Wow! how could anyone find a problem with this entry. Nice even cut, excellent color, beautiful light coating of sauce, and a fantastic display of the entry.

Ronie Burnett

8-needs sauce on edges

Ed
1/30/2014 02:02:18 am

Not a fan of the side view! It shows how thin the meat is as well as the unappetising knuckles. Cuts and texture are pretty good, but placement is kinda haphazard.
I think your entry is above average, so here's a 7

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
1/30/2014 02:35:06 am

Score/Reasons: 9 all the way. Nicely done.

Suggestions/Comments: Some judges may not be so keen on the two outside ribs being positioned with the cut sides up. Didn't bother me, just sayin'.

8- Ribs look good, nice color and shine. The reason for the 8 is the two ribs on the sides; they taper too much on the ends and appear dry although it could be the photo.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
1/30/2014 02:43:48 am

Score = 8 , Nice presentation. The two ribs on their sides had smears of sauce on them. If the sauce is supposed to be there, make sure it covers the entire rib. If not, make sure to clean them up prior to turning the box in. Attention to small details like this is what differentiates an 8 from a 9.

Score 9
The ribs are of fairly even size. I like the presentation of the 2 side ribs. They are shiny and look good enough to eat

Jim S. NEBS KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 7, Uneven cuts. Meat in the side view looks dry.

Suggestions/Comments = Work on portion cutting. Centralizing the meat within the bux would help appearance as well.

9 - Fantastic color. Look moist and VERY appealing. Excellent box.

9 - I like this box, nice presentation, nice color, not too much sauce.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
1/30/2014 12:46:22 pm

Score/Reasons: 8/The only thing I can see wrong is that the ribs at the top are smaller than the rest.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
1/30/2014 02:30:46 pm

Score/Reasons: 9 - nice looking ribs. Nice rich color, not oversauced.

Suggestions/Comments: I wouldn't change a thing on the flat pieces. The two sideways pieces both have uneven sauce applied to the edges. The length and small bone end appear to have sauce while the brisket end has no sauce at all. The left rib appears a bit ragged at the brisket end. If the other side looks better, place it upwards. I didn't deduct for either of these.

8... Good color with light sauce. Clean cuts . Meat looks dry on the two turned up ribs.

Close the gaps between the ribs.

8.. uneven cuts

Score/Reasons = 7, tops look moist, but sides look very dry. Uneven cuts, uneven sizes, and unevenly sauced.

Suggestions/Comments = if you are going to put sauce on the sides of the ribs, then cover the entire side, not just a smear.

Ira Trexler

I would give this a 9 . It has good color and I like the way the rib was laid on it side to allow me to see the color of the meat. good job

Score/Reasons=8, Looks nice. The ribs on their sides could have been better and that's the reason for the 8 instead of 9.

Suggestions=Use nicer, more uniform, ribs when showing them on their side.

Score/Reasons = 7 Good color, more care taken on the arrangement, and ribs turned on side detract from overall appearance.

8 - More attention to detail in the arrangement of pieces and application of sauce

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
2/6/2014 07:18:56 am

Score/Reasons = 9, I like the box. About the only thing would be the cuts could be a little cleaner

Suggestions/Comments = Make the cuts a little cleaner to prevent some of the rough cutting on the ribs.

Eric KCBS CMBJ
2/16/2014 08:33:10 am

Score/Reasons = 8. Looks a little dry.

Suggestions/Comments = The left and right rib cut surfaces don't look that appetizing - rough? Sauce looks unevenly applied.

BBQ Critics: Compare your scores with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
