8 outside top ribs look a bit burnt
2/26/2014 02:29:02 am
7 - do not like the way the bones are arranged.
2/26/2014 02:32:43 am
9 - Nice color, nice placement of the ribs, eye catching.
2/26/2014 02:45:05 am
a 9! Good color, look moist, good knife skills. The arrangement is unique and allows for the shorter ribs to be on the outside and part of a pattern and, therefore, not a liability.

Score/Reasons = 9, Nice color, good glaze. Did not mark down for darker ribs on the sides as it may be the picture.

8- Good looking ribs; I like to color and the glaze. The deduction is based on the top layer of ribs being spaced out so far apart and being able to look between the ribs.

I give this one an 8, but a high 8. The box is full, but I don't know that it helps. The small rib on the left hurts the apperance. But color is good.

9 - Although the presentation catches my eye as 'odd' - it doesn't take away from the fact the ribs look perfect.

8 - color seems inconsistent, (maybe caused by the flash). Ribs are trimmed well and appear moist.

Looks good, would like to eat, I would give it a 9.

Score/Reason = 8/Only detraction is the placement of the ribs, which is not appealing!

8-meat looks lightly glazed, not too dark
2/26/2014 04:07:36 pm
Score 7. Looks like this team was just trying to score higher points by "thinking outside the norm", but it is not appealing to me. Also the two outside ribs appear off color and overcooked.

8 - Top and bottom spacing different.

7....Meat looks moist. The yellow substance really takes away the points. The arrangement lets the Judge see the meat.

Score/Reasons = 8, nice shine, but still looks a bit dry. Size differences detracts a bit.

Very attractive and inviting box. Just the right amount of glaze and a nice color. Even cuts makes me happy. A 9.

Score/Reasons: 7. I don't care for he appearance of the ribs on the far left and far right.

7 - Not uniform, it appears the ribs on the bottom are a different size. Some appears darker than others

Looks tossed in box. Nice cuts, even sizes, all lost due to placement in box. Perfect amount of sauce.

Score/Reasons =7, The Lincoln Log Construction really takes away from what could have been a great looking box.

score/reason 7 2 outer ribs look very dark and dry, center ribs look ok looks like has a lot of fat mixed in that could have been trimmed

9 - I really like this box, nice presentation, good colors, nice moisture, I like the "weave" appearance.

Score/Reasons = 8, something about the color looks "off" to me - could be the camera or lighting. Nice straight cuts and meat appears to be just the right amount of tender.
3/4/2014 06:42:34 am
Score/Reasons 7 Nice color, the arrangement (while maybe thinking outside the box) is more distracting than appealing.
3/5/2014 01:58:24 am
Score: 7 Side samples darker the the rest and look dry. 3rd rib, on top, appears narrow compared to the rest.

SCORE/REASON: 8 Very good looking ribs. Interesting placement. Uniformity in rib size will improve score.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.
In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).
Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.
Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.
Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
