BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8. Good color nice arrangement and look moist. However, knife skills produced tapering, not parallel, cuts on some ribs.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 9, nice color and glaze.

Suggestions/Comments = Try to have the entire photo in focus. Try for a bit more eveness in slicing the ribs,

9- Great looking ribs. Nice color, nice shine, even cuts and the ribs all appear similar in size and shape.

Dennis M

Score 9
Comment > Good color. Maybe a little too much rub added. Hard to tell for sure what the granular appearance is from a photo.

I give this one a 9.

Tiffany KCBS CBJ-CTC

9 - I'm sure you'll hear about the odd cuts from at least one judge - but overall the presentation is good and the ribs have a perfect consistent color.

Score 9
The ribs look even and not too much sauce. I'd like to try one

Score = 8

Good looking ribs but a little ragged on the cutting. Sauce also looks a little grainy.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

8 - Samples appear moist and near consistent size. Nice looking ribs.

Scotty

Very nice, cuts could be straighter but probably what you had to deal with, 8.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reason = 8/Nice color, but placement is offset.

Brad CBJ KCBS

9-like the look of the color

glaze is a little inconsistent, could be the lighting

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 8. Reasons: The dry look of the top areas with the wet sauce on only part of the ribs with the crusty look on the balance is not appealing.

9.....Good color. Sauce is a little spotty. Meat looks moist.

Top rib on the left should be lined up. Good garnish on the left side. Loose looking garnish on the right side makes the box look out of balance.

8 - Unequal cuts.

Score/Reasons = 9, cuts not even, but these ribs look dad-gum good to me. Might look a pinch dry, but might just be the photo.

Suggestions/Comments = try to make cuts even.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
2/27/2014 01:49:04 am

Score/Reasons = 8, just a bit too much sauce. It makes the meat too shiny. May be the pic, but looks like some of sauce has settled into puddles

Suggestions/Comments = use less sauce to prevent the shininess of the meat and make sure the sauce is applied evenely.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 9, Cuts aren't quite straight, but with such great looking ribs I can overlook that small flaw.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reasons: 8. Would like to see the slices more uniform

Ernie/KCBS

8 - It appears the sauce is pooled in the center of the rib.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
2/28/2014 01:05:17 am

Cuts not so good, you've lost the ideal slab look, more a bunch of singles stacked higher or lower.
What sauce is there is splotchy, but I would prefer that to soaked in sauce. It looks like these ribs will have some good flavor if they don't come off as dry.
I feel ok giving an above average 7.

Jim S NEBS KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 8, Meat color looks good. Knife cuts kept from getting the 9.

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score/reason 6 looks like the rub is thick, over sauced ribs not cut straight giving a uneven look to the appearance, no wow facture for me just average looking box of ribs

8-nice box ribs not even or would be 9

Matt KCBS CBJ
3/4/2014 05:03:44 am

Score/Reasons = 9, great color, ribs look tender but not over cooked, box is nice and full

Suggestions/Comments = Sharpen the blade on your electric knife and the cuts will be more clean and won't have that "fuzzy" look on the edges.

Score/Reasons 7 Looks a little dry, or maybe it is just the type od sauce used. Arrangement could be a little more together.

Suggestions/Comments While the garnish on the sides is ok, there is no at the front or back. garnish should evenly frame the meat as in a picture frame or no garnish at all.

Bob CBJ/KCBS
3/5/2014 01:48:24 am

Score: 8 Nice color and looks moist.
Suggestion: Cuts need to be more even. Pay more attention to the garnish. Looks very loose on the right side vs the left. Although not a judging factor, some may reduce score.

I would score this box a 9. Yummy!!!
Suggestion: Don't change a thing!!

Bob in Corona, KCBS/CBJ
3/6/2014 07:53:22 pm

SCORE/REASONS: 7 Ribs have an overcook appearance and unevenly sliced.

SUGGESTIONS: May want to even out the sauce or use no sauce.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
