BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

6 - look dry - multiple stacks look busy.

9
The tc will appreciate

7 - Lay out is a little strange to me, not eye catching at first glance. Looks like regular ribs that have been cut down.

Lorne Rae

8. Good color, look moist and the unique arrangement is pleasing to the eye. However, the knife cuts look a bit ragged.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
2/26/2014 03:23:13 am

Score/Reasons = 8, May be higher in person. Color is good, light saucing, needs a little sheen to make it look less dry.

Suggestions/Comments = Neaten up the arrangement and even up the slicing.

Mike CBJ, KCBS, GBA

9- Good looking box; the ribs have a good color, looks like they have some bark too. Could use a little shine to make them pop a little more.

Score 8
Comment > The bottom piece distracts from the appearance of the presentation and makes the box look cluttered.

I have to give this one an 8. The photo makes the ribs look a little dry. But the layout doesn't look good.

8 - could be the picture - but these little guys look a bit dry.

the front rib looks a little small. They are not shiny. But I'd still like to taste some

Score = 8

A little rough on the slicing and crust looks a little dry.

8 - Meat appears moist and not over sauced.

Oh my 9.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reason = 7/Ribs are of nice color but need to be cleaned up; there appear to be some stray pieces of something on a couple of them, and the rib in the upper right looks like it was pulled apart from another instead of cleanly cut.

Comments/Recommendations = The ribs look like beef short ribs not pork spare ribs; they're definitely not baby backs!

Brad CBJ/KCBS

8-color not bad, surface of meat looks a little dry

BlueSmoke KCBS CBJ/COMP COOK

7......Meat look dry. Ragged cuts. Back row not lined up. Needs some shine.

Garnish needs to frame the meat to make it work to your advantage, Unusual layout won't go over good with most Judges.

Larry MCBJ

8 - Uneven cuts. Nice looking loin backs!

Tom – CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS & comp cook
2/27/2014 12:56:35 am

Score/Reasons = 9, a few ragged cuts, but these ribs look very appetizing to me. Lots of meat on these short things!

Suggestions/Comments = cleaner cuts would help, strange arrangement with the left-over rib in the front, might look better if left out.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
2/27/2014 01:52:50 am

Score/Reasons = 7, the meat is a little too dark. Also, the meat was not cut smoothly. There are pieces of meat on the cut surface.

Suggestions/Comments = Maybe use a very sharp knife which would cut the meat cleanly.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 9: Nice looking baby backs, they look a little dry, but not enough to affect the score.

Bobby Whitefield

Probably an 8. Cuts are more ragged than I like to see and meat appears dry. Having said that, ribs appear tender. Would like to have seen more glaze.

Bill C KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reasons: 7. Look dry. (Could be the photo)

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Thems some pretty meaty lookin bones there boy.
Cuts are pretty ragged, looks like a game of "how much rib can I stuff in this box'? It looks kinda dry.
It would bother me to call this above average so I'm in for a 6.

Ernie/KCBS

7 - Uneven in size and appears dry

Jim S. NEBS KCBS CBJ
2/28/2014 03:36:47 am

Score/Reasons = 7, Meat looks on the dry side. The portions (size of the ribs)are more than generous, but in this box less would have been more.

8 - Great looking ribs, but the presentation needs to be better. Consider placing the front three in the same direction as the back four.

Ronnie B KCBS-CBJ MBN-Judge

7-little rib looks like a lot of fat

Matt KCBS CBJ
3/4/2014 05:00:13 am

Score/Reasons = 7,ribs look overcooked and dry. I like "dry" ribs, but these look too dry, sloppy presentation

Suggestions/Comments = Line those ribs up, and add an 8th piece to make everything symmetrical. The devil is in the details. These may be the best tasting ribs all day, but they don't look it on my computer screen.

Score/Reasons 6 Ribs could have had a little more shine to make them more appealing. The arrangement does nothing for the entry.

Suggestions/Comments garnish, again is sparse. Garnish should evenly frame the meat as in a picture frame or no garnish at all.

Bob CBJ/KCBS
3/5/2014 01:42:10 am

Score: 8 Looks very appetizing. Nice color.
Suggestion: Although it was nice of the cook to provide a sample for the TC, the sample in front takes away from the uniformity of the box.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ CTC and Comp Cook
3/5/2014 09:34:24 am

I would score this box an 8. Ribs are a little to dark in color but it may just be the lighting in the photo.
Suggestion: Try to keep your parsley fresh and moist before putting it in the box.

Bob in Corona KCBS/CBJ
3/6/2014 08:06:06 pm

SCORE/REASON: 6 Meaty Ribs. Ribs do not that eye appeal. A couple of ribs appear slightly over cooked or something, maybe knife issues. Need some uniformity in appearance.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
