BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

7 - too much bone showing - look overdone.

Mike- CBJ, KCBS, GBA
2/26/2014 02:33:01 am

7- Color is a little dark and looks to have some fat that hasn't been rendered out. Maybe a little too much sauce.

Dan KCBS CTC,MCBJ
2/26/2014 02:33:59 am

8 color on the dark side

Doyle Hill
2/26/2014 02:41:17 am

7 - too much sauce and product isn't uniform is size.

Lorne Rae
2/26/2014 02:54:02 am

8. Good color, look moist, nice arrangement. However, some ribs are cut narrower than others.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
2/26/2014 03:29:45 am

Score/Reasons = 7, maybe 8 in person. Appears to be oversauced.

Suggestions/Comments = None

I give this one an 8. The various sizes hurt the box.

Tiffany KCBS CBJ-CTC
2/26/2014 04:52:59 am

7 - The photo may have an overall yellow color that is causing some of the off-putting thoughts, but the ribs also appear to be way over sauced.

SPS CBJ BBQ BRETHREN
2/26/2014 06:12:54 am

Score 8
The back 1 2 & 4th ribs look a little oversone. The rest of the ribs look over done also.

Ike, CBJ KCBS
2/26/2014 09:45:45 am

Score = 7

Unfortunately the sloppy sauce just ruins these ribs. Otherwise the box isn't bad.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ
2/26/2014 10:02:46 am

7 - Ribs appear moist, but sauced unevenly. Sample sizes vary a lot.

Scotty
2/26/2014 10:43:50 am

Messy, messy, 6.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
2/26/2014 01:38:32 pm

score/Reason = 7/ribs are of different sizes, not trimmed neatly, and appear overly sauced.

Brad CBJ/KCBS
2/26/2014 02:14:37 pm

8-looks good, nice glaze, ribs appear random from different racks maybe

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
2/26/2014 03:52:23 pm

Score 7. Reasons: Off color sauce, too much sauce "painted on" and uneven color of the meat. Not much appeal to this entry.

BlueSmoke KCBS CBJ/COMP COOK
2/27/2014 12:09:47 am

6.......Over sauced and goopy. Uneven color. No real bang to the box.

Match up the ribs a little better. Check the garnish for off color like the yellow piece in the from. It's distracting.

Larry MCBJ
2/27/2014 12:32:26 am

8 - over sauced/brush marks.

Tom – CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS & comp cook
2/27/2014 12:59:49 am

Score/Reasons = 7, unevenly cut, uneven coloration, unevenly sauced, sauced too heavy, but still kind of appetizing

Suggestions/Comments = match up ribs for side-by-side display

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
2/27/2014 01:58:44 am

Score/Reasons = 6, One of the bottom ribs appears to be cooked more than the other, this is shown by the amount of bone showing, which is more than the other ribs. The color is not uniform. There is too much sauce and it is not applied evenly, which make the meat unappetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = Use ribs with the same amount of bone showing and with even colorization. The sauce make the meat unappetizing, use less sauce and assure it is applied evenly.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
2/27/2014 02:06:28 am

Score= 7: Sauce is uneven, color is uneven.

Score/Reasons: 7.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Saucing the bones makes it look sloppy. Not much care in box placement.
Just not trippin my trigger..
A generous above average score of 7.

Ernie/KCBS

1 - Only four samples

Jim S. NEBS KCBS CBJ
2/28/2014 03:34:08 am

Score/Reasons = 7, Irregularity of cuts and coloring make a very uneven box.

Suggestions/Comments =The lighter patches on the ribs is that fat? Trim off prior to cook.

Jeff KCBS CBJ

7-looks nice,ribs aren't even

Matt KCBS CBJ
3/4/2014 04:57:45 am

Score/Reasons = 7, just above average to me, brush marks in the sauce and not lined up. Take more time and care with the box and your score would be an 8/9

Suggestions/Comments = Clean cuts, line up ribs from the same rack next to each other, and put them closer together

Score/Reasons 7 (and gracious at that) nice shine, but just something odd about the color. Not sure if they are all from the same rack.

Suggestions/Comments Take a little more care with the garnish to even it our, so it evenly frames the meat.

Bob CBJ/KCBS
3/5/2014 01:36:40 am

Score: 6 Forefront end pieces look dried out, almost burnt. Uneven coloring throughout. Sauce looks uneven.
Suggestion: Select pieces that look more uniform, especially where the bone is exposed. A little lighter on the sauce.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ CTC and Comp Cook
3/5/2014 09:35:45 am

I would score this box an 8. Looks like a lot of sauce.
Suggestion: Try to apply sauce evenly.

Bob in Corona
3/6/2014 08:14:02 pm

SCORE/REASON: 6 Uneven color and saucing / rubs. Some ribs looks burnt.

SUGGESTIONS: Be cautious of particles in the sauce, ie 1/8" rule.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
