BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

9 - Beautiful - but watch the sauce - looks too heavy and may affect the taste.

Score/Reasons = 8, good color, slightly too much sauce, too many specs.

Suggestions/Comments = let sauce set more. show interior of meat.I don't care for the back piece. Cut ribs more uniform

Score - 8 Gorgeous looking ribs, color is very good, arranged nicely, slicing job is almost perfect, nice glaze but just a little too much sauce for me. Excellent box!

Recommendation: reduce the amount of sauce and slice all of the ribs cleanly

I give this one a 9. I feelit has a little more sauce than I like though.

I feel this has alittle ore sauce than I like, but I still give it a 9.

8 - Nice presentation, nice color, way too much sauce. This is a meat contest, not a sauce contest.

9 nice clean cuts good color maybe a little heavy on sauce

Score = 8

Ribs are a little uneven in size and have way too much sauce on them.I want to judge the meat, not the sauce.

Perfect looking box. the ribs are fairly even , are very shiny and appears to have a tad too much sauce. they look delecious

8 - Very nice looking ribs. Slightly over sauced, good color.

8 - glaze too loose, needs to set.

Lorne Rae

8. Nice arrangement, looks moist, even color. However the second left rib is wider than the others in the row and upsets the pattern. Had it been moved one to the right so it was in the middle then the pattern would be obvious and I would score it higher.

Matt KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 9, uniform cuts, ribs look excellent, nice full box

Suggestions/Comments = No suggestions.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 9

Comments: My only concern is that the sauce might be a little too heavy.

Score/Reasons = 8, Overall the box looks good except for the fact there is too much sauce or glaze

Suggestions/Comments = suggest using less sauce. Use the sauce as a condiment and let the meat show through.

Score/Reasons = 9, looks moist and really dad-gum appetizing to me! NOT perfect, but Excellent!!!

Suggestions/Comments = Arrangement is a bit strange, but not a scoring point.

9..... Great box of ribs. Nice color with a good sheen. Even size for the most part.

Sauce is on the verge of being to heavy. Box looks a little crowded.

8. Too much sauce and jagged cuts on some of the ribs.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Oh look, world famous over sauced Blues Hog ribs!!
Nice cuts however, the sideways rib in back does nothing for the presentation. It looks forced in there.
All that being said I still need to give you a very good 8.

8 - Too much sauce.

Larry MCBJ

9 - I want the whole box!

Suggestion- Some will deduct for over saucing and be careful to make all samples the same width.

Score/Reason = 7/The ribs look great, or should I say the sauce looked great! I can't tell what the ribs actually look like!

Comment/Recommendation = Don't put so much sauce on the ribs; it's the meat that's judged, not the sauce.

Entry looks terrific - uniform pieces of meat, arranged nicely on the garnish, extra piece for the TC BUT there is simply too much sauce !
Scored an 8

Score/Reasons = 8 Ribs look really nice, good color, nice shine. However it is a little unbalanced due to placement of the rib in the back.

Suggestions/Comments Again even out the garnish to frame the meat, like a picture frame.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
