BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

9 - Ribs look good, but also a lot of care went into the presentation - nice job!

Score/Reasons = 8, nice uniform cuts, good arrangement. Looks very good, but not great
Suggestions/Comments = show interior of meat, maybe more sauce( hard to tell, could be dry?)

Randy KCBS and Utah BBQ Association CBJ

Score: 8 - Arrangement is uniform and slicing is very good, color is a little bit to red for me but overall a very nice box.

Suggestion: let color get a little darker on the ribs.

I give this one a 9 .

8 - Color isn't uniform, evedently it's 2 different slabs. Also I noticed the cuts.

8 good color and sauce amount

Cuts a little ragged on two right ribs

Score = 9

Nice looking box of ribs. Pieces are even in size and not over-sauced. Picture quality isn't the best-would probably look better in real life.

Score 8
I'm not sure if the picture is accurate. The layout is very nice with the shorter ribs in the middle. Unfortunately they do not look very shiny, or maybe they are supposed to to be St Louis style No Sauce ?

8 - Sized evenly, don't appear to be over sauced. Color should be darker and more uniform.

Score/Reasons = 9, Bad picture does not do this box justice. Good color, light glaze.

Suggestions/Comments = None

9! Good arrangement, even color, look moist, good knife skills. Attention to detail is evident as the pattern is creative (ie. a vee at the bottom and the two narrow ribs at the edges).

Matt KCBS CBJ
3/19/2014 02:11:01 am

Score/Reasons = 8, these ribs look very good, but just a little too "red" to be a 9. Might be a 9 in person.

Suggestions/Comments = The way the ribs angle in the box and aren't linear isn't as pleasing to the eye as ribs that are neatly lined up.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 9

Comments: Color looks uneven, but I think the quality of the photo is part of that issue, but ribs on the right do look darker than those on the left. Going to give benefit of the doubt on this.

Score/Reasons = 8, The ribs appear to me a bit dry.

Suggestions/Comments = Suggest lightly painting on some sauce. Just a little sauce, use as a condiment.

Score/Reasons = 8, poor photo, but meat looks very dry and uneven coloration. Still looks pretty appetizing though.

Suggestions/Comments = JUST IMPROVE THE PHOTO!!!

9.....Nicely sauced. Good color with good even cuts.

The bones are distracting at the bottom. Turn the ribs around so the bones aren't the vocal point of the presentation.

Leonard Montgomery

7 - looks bland, not enough moisture present

joe

8 - excellent presentation, nice sizes, looks great. It could be the picture, but the color looks off for a nine.

Score 9 - They look like they might be a little dry, but they are well presented and texture score will grade the quality of cooking.

9 outstanding

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Nice cuts but still a ragged edge here and there. Color makes me think of tomato sauce. You've lost the slab look and is just a bunch rib bones from several racks.
Above average 7.

score / reason 8 looks a little over sauced, appear to be a little over cooked looking, nice color but close to getting to dark. would love to taste these

Score/Reason = 8/Ribs look great but the photo makes it difficult to see detail.

Comment/Recommendation = You went to the trouble of slanting the top of the ribs left and right, but didn't take the time to clean the loose bits up.

Judging on apearance only: An excellent entry. Job well done !!!
Scored an immediate 9.

Doug CBJ/KCBS

very high 8, Color, texture, cuts spot on.

I would have gave 9 but the hangars on the bottom 3rd and top fifth rib grabbed my attention immediately.

Cut the hangars on the 2 ribs.

Score/Reasons = 7 Good color but dull looking. Arrangement does seem to flow, as in the ribs were not placed in the box in the order they came off the rack.

Suggestions/Comments Even to garnish to frame the meat, like in framing a picture.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
