BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 - Just a few inconsistencies with the saucing and the char kept me from a 9.

Score/Reasons = 7,piece look darker in certain spots.
Suggestions/Comments = show interior of meat. Use only one type of garnish.

9 - Nice color - Looks like the ribs came from the same slab, nice

I don't like the garnish, but I think th eribs look pretty good, I would give it a high 8, just not quite a 9.

Score = 8

Uneven sizes and ribs look a little burnt. Still would like to try them.

Score/Reasons = 7, Too much variation in colors with some spots looking burnt.

Suggestions/Comments = None

8. Good arrangement, look moist, even coloring, good knife skills. However, the left rib has shifted up and is out of alignment.

Matt KCBS CBJ
3/19/2014 02:20:07 am

Score/Reasons = 6, the ribs themselves look under cooked, but the sauce is over cooked and sloppy, cuts are uneven, but the box looks full. These ribs are just average in appearance to me.

Suggestions/Comments = Cook more than one rack and use the best 4 ribs from each rack. Line the ribs up nicely and make sure your knife is super sharp. Even the sauce out with your brush before setting it in the smoker.

Score = 7, Ribs on left are much darker than those on the left. Almost to the point they look burnt. Ribs also look dry.

Score/Reasons = 7, Looks VERY dry and has uneven coloration.

Suggestions/Comments = Meat arrangement could be better (not a scoring point) and garnish should frame all the way around the meat (missing on left side of the box).

Score/Reasons = 9, the ribs look good

Suggestions/Comments = just a some sauce as a condiment

9....Good color. Meat looks moist. Good even cuts. Not over sauced.

The dark area on the bottom left is distracting. Need more shine. Spitz the meat before closing the lid. Garish a downer.

9 - nice looking meat, good color and moisture

Score 9 - I believe this is a well prepared and presented slab.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Nice color, well cut with even sizes. Sauce is set well.
Only problem is placement of ribs in box, try lining them up even.
A very good 8.

8 - looks a little burn towards the end, may be the photo

Larry MCBJ

9 - A little dark in spots however, it doesn't detract from score.

7 Some of the ribs are burnt and look uneven in length. Can't tell if the ribs have some sauce or it was cooked off the meat.

Score 9. Great looking entry. I would suggest the team change the look of the garnish. This would highlight the entry better.

8. Looks like some small burnt places on the ribs.
Try to make the bed of lettuce uniform around the outside of the box.

score / reason 6 looks to be a little burnt and over cooked, not very uniform in sizes and cuts need to be straighter. looks very dry

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reason = 7/The tops of the ribs are not appetizing and appear to be overdone and tough to bite through. Of course, it's difficult to say just by observation.

Very nice looking entry, but somewhat disappointed in the "non - uniformity" look of the ribs. They look like they would taste great though. Scored an 8.

8 - nice looking box. would like to see a more even color to the ribs. In person might be a 9. Bottom line, they look good enough to eat!

Score/Reasons = This is one where I wish KCBS used .5 points. I'd give it a 6.5 If I go with firs impression a 6. Look a little dry. Nice color. Also straighten up the arrangement of the ribs so they flow instead of looking jagged.

Suggestions/Comments Garnish appears to be kinda thrown in the box. If using garnish attention should be given to it, so it looks like you care, not just thrown in.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
