BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 - Hard to be certain - but the ribs look a pinch dry.

Score/Reasons = 8, cut pieces more uniform. Looks a little dry. Nice arrangement.

Suggestions/Comments =More sauce. I like to see the interior of meat. Looks a little clunky

8 - Nice color, nice arrangement. Square up the presentation and it'll be a 9.

I would give this one a high 7. Meat looks good, but the spread in sizes and then having the sizes mixed makes it look like the box was just thrown together.

8 color good

The profile piece throws box out of balance

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 8

Ribs look delicious and meaty but appear a little dry....possibly a 9 in person.

Score 8
The ribs are uneven, and not sauced. They aren't shiny either.

8 - Slight dry appearance. Showing the side confirms. Not over sauced.

Mike Cannon
3/19/2014 01:18:07 am

6 - looks dry; bone edge unappealing

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
3/19/2014 01:45:12 am

Score/Reasons = 8, looks a little dry, otherwise nice meaty looking ribs.

Suggestions/Comments = Neaten up the presentation, many judges will mark down for a less than perfectly arranged box.

7. Good arrangement, even color, look moist. However, the ribs are of differing widths and the edges have uneven knife cuts.

Matt KCBS CBJ
3/19/2014 02:26:49 am

Score/Reasons = 6, just average in appearance to me. Might be great for taste and tenderness, but appearance needs some work. The ribs look overcooked on the outside, cuts are uneven and placement in the box is sloppy.

Suggestions/Comments = I think you can see what needs improvement here.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8, Ribs look a little dry and color is a little uneven.

Score/Reasons = 8, looks dry, but still pretty appetizing. looks like lots of meat on these bones.

Suggestions/Comments = the arrangement could be better that would make the box look better (not a scoring point).

7....Meat looks moist. Decent color. Ribs don't match up. Haphazard prepared box.

From the Judge's view the box is out of balance with turned up rib. It might be a better presentation if the ribs were laid out left to right with the up turned rib at the top.

Leonard Montgomery

9 - good smoke ring, meat looks good and meaty, dry look not bad for this meat

joe

9 - I think the presentation could improve; however, the ribs in the box get my nine.

Tony Schroeder
3/19/2014 05:26:21 am

8 pretty nice size pork

Ed KCBS MCBJ
3/19/2014 06:05:31 am

Nice meaty looking ribs. Cuts are pretty ragged, and placement in box is haphazard at best. Thanks for not glopping sauce all over them.
I'll bet they taste pretty good though.
I'm in for a very good 8, but a 7 isn't too far out of the question.

Ernie
3/19/2014 06:33:06 am

7 - looks dry and don't like the rib that is turned sideways.

Larry MCBJ
3/19/2014 07:31:38 am

7 - Looks thrown into box, dry, and little effort on presentation.

Suggestion- With even spacing and alignment coupled with light sauce/glaze, these would approach a 9 from me.

8-edges need some sauce

9. Looks great!
Try to make the entry more uniform in the box.

Jeff KCBS CBJ
3/20/2014 02:47:50 pm

score / reason 7 looks burnt and over cooked looks dry , could have been placed in box straighter and cut more uniform

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
3/20/2014 03:57:35 pm

Score/Reason = 6/Ribs are mediocre looking and not well-placed in the box. They don't have any "pop," either in the placement or in the way they look.

Steve R - KCBS and BBQ Brethren CBJ
3/21/2014 10:59:07 am

Meat looks good but more effort is needed in the presentation.
Scored a 7

Raine® CBJ CTC Cooking team link
3/25/2014 01:36:20 am

Score/Reasons = 6 looks dry, dull. Unbalanced arrangement. One shorter rib then a longer rib then short, instead of flowing together.

Suggestions/Comments While the garnish does frame the meat, even it out a little.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
