BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

7 - It may be the coloring in the picture, but the char looks too dark and the sauce seems to give the ribs almost a yellow appearance. Bottom line these don't look like ribs I really want to eat.

Score/Reasons = 7, piece on right needs to be better trimmed. Too much char, looks like you tried to cover up an over cook by adding sauce.

Suggestions/Comments = Better arrangement of garnish. Meat looks like it was cooked too long.

7 - Product appears to be a little burnt and too much sauce

I give this one an 8. The pic makes this one hard to really see.

Score = 6

It may be the picture but overall this box doesn't look appealing. Ribs appear to be over cooked and dry, even with sauce.

8 - Nice uniform pieces. Appear over sauced, but may be the photo flash that gives that look. Great color.

Mike Cannon

7 - dark and generally unappealing

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
3/19/2014 01:50:39 am

Score/Reasons = Poor picture. Appears burnt and dry despite the sheen from the sauce. This is a below average 5.

Suggestions/Comments = Neaten up the garnish and be careful with the sauce to not drip it on the garnish

Lorne Rae

8. Good arrangement, even color, look moist. However the left rib looks tapered to a narrower top and it is placed away from its neighbor which allows some green to show through. The remaining ribs in the row are flush with each other which establishes a pattern for the box.

Matt KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 5, sorry, but these ribs look below average to me. They look burnt, over sauced and are sloppily placed in the box.

Suggestions/Comments = Move the ribs further away from the heat source to avoid charring them so much. God easy on the sauce and don't let it burn. Garnish needs to be more carefully laid in the box and placement of the ribs needs to be neat. Pay attention to the details.

Score = 6, Ribs look very dark in color which is very unappetizing to me.

Score/Reasons = 7, man are these dark! Not evenly sauced, uneven coloration, and uneven cuts (right rib is cut strange). Dark color makes these less appetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = would benefit from a different arrangement (not a score point, but would look better).

6.....Looks over cooked and dry. Rib on the right not rimmed. Some bone ends are sauced others not. It's distracting.

Use the garnish to highlight the meat. Take the time ad do it right.

Score/Reasons = 7, There is really too much sauce which make it look slimy which takes away from the the appearance. I do like the caramelization on the meat though

Suggestions/Comments = Use the sauce / glaze as a condiment and allow the appearance of the meat show through.

Leonard Montgomery

7 - glaze too heavy, takes away from the look of the meat itself

No symmetry in placement. A bunch of rib pieces. Color is not very appetizing. Wide pieces, skinny pieces.
This is an average presentation 6.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
3/19/2014 04:11:51 pm

Score 6. Absolutely NO appeal with this box at all! The meat has no color and appears burnt, the sauce appears to be covering some poorly cooked ribs, and even the box layout and garnish does not add to this entry. Yes, I know we don't judge garnish, but this box needs a lot of help. I believe that this entry was made by a team this hasn't entered many contests.

7- The ribs are dark and give the appearance of being overcooked.

Comment: The garnish looks sloppy and is covering the ribs in some areas.

Not too much uniformity in these pieces and I'm not crazy about one last piece on the side by itself. 7

5, Meat looks dark, overcooked. Sauce looks bumpy. It doesn't look like care was taken to clean up the box (bit of meat on garnish). Rough cuts (not straight clean lines). Overall Very sloppy work.

I would suggest making the rib cuts straight and clean. Take a little time and pick out the bits of meat that has come off.

7 - Way too dark. Not the best picture so they might look better in person but the glare makes it tough but they do look too dark.

Score/Reasons = 5 Nothing really appealing about this box. The color is not appealing, unbalanced arrangement. Just looks like a mess.

Suggestions/Comments Garnish, looks a mess as well. Does not appear to have any thought given to the garnish at all, as in trimming it to fit the box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
