BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 - I think the flash gives these the appearance of being a bit oversauced and the meat maybe a bit pale.

Score/Reasons = 8, pieces not uniform in size.
Suggestions/Comments = more garnish in front. It could be the picture, but the front row looks much bigger than the back row. Good sauce level. more uniform color would be nice.

8 - Nice presentation, nice color, too much sauce

I give this one a 9. Neat and well sized. Makes me want to dig in.

Score = 7

Ribs appear uneven in size (may be the angle of the picture) and they are over-sauced. These ribs could be under-cooked.

Color good except for edges look burned, sauce is globby in a couple spots

This cook is proud of his ribs. They are fairly even, not too much sauce, and are shiny. They are very appetizing

8 - Good color. Appear over sauced, but could be the photo flash. Very nice.

7 - too wet

Score/Reasons = 8, Nice looking box, sauce is appears a little heavy.

Suggestions/Comments =

8. Good arrangement, look moist, even color, good knife skills. However, while the creases on the four top pieces align nicely the bottom right rib has a different shape (twisted top and different crease line) suggesting it was not a contiguous rib, thereby spoiling a nice pattern.

Matt KCBS CBJ
3/19/2014 02:33:29 am

Score/Reasons = 8, full box with decent color on the sauce, the tips of the ribs appear overcooked (charred)

Suggestions/Comments = even out the brush strokes; baby backs are hard to make look nice and organized in a box because they are so curvy.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 7: Color is a little light and very uneven. Sauce looks too heavy to me.

Tom - CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS,NCBBQA & comp cook

Score/Reasons = 8, looks unevenly sauced, uneven coloration, and a lot of sauce, not a fan of the dark edges on the top of the ribs.

Suggestions/Comments = Arrange garnish better - TOO much in the lower right corner (not a scoring point, but would make the box look better).

8......Color is light but has a nice shine. Sauce looks goopy. Good even, clean cuts.

Take more care of the garnish. The lower right corner should have been trimmed out to make the box look more balanced.

Score/Reasons = 7, The red color and the heavy sauce is not very appetizing to me. The red color is not natural.

Suggestions/Comments = Use less sauce and a sauce that is richer in color. Red is not natural but some other sauces, if use sparingly, are more appetizing.

8 - good moisture, appears to be meaty, camera angle makes sizes out of proportion, may not be the case looking from the top

joe

7 - too much sauce, the ribs appear pale in color under all the sauce.

Bob

Score 9 - These are ribs that I would want to eat. Also noticed the consideration of volunteers by having extra ribs. Thanks.

Score 8. Reasons: I would like to see the ribs in both rows more equal in size and LESS sauce coating the ribs.

I would score this an 8. Good color and shine but the glaze looks a little thick.

Comment: The garnish in the lower right corner seems to be working its way up the corner, not sure if the box shifted when being handled or it was built that way.

Another case where the entry is prepared with care, uniform pieces and arranged nicely, but too much sauce. I scored it with an 8.

Score/Reasons 8 Nice color, nice arrangement. Could just be the picture shadows , a little charring on ends throwing the balance of color off.

Suggestions/Comments Even the garnish to evenly frame the meat, like framing a picture. If you are going to use garnish

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
