BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 - Appears to be oversauced.

Score: 9

Ribs are well placed and evenly sized....possibly too much sauce but look appetizing.

I would go ahead and give it a 9. But the two ribs on right first row should have been place on bottom, and four even sized placed on tops.

These are beautiful and I'm glad you put in 8 cuts. Great color and sheen. Consider a "double cut" - cutting the bone out of every other rib to give more rib on each remaining bone.

Score 9
The ribs are of even size, shiny & moist. They look delicious

8 - Nice presentation, good color but too much sauce. Cut back on the sauce and it would be a 9 for me.

Erle Smith; KCBS CBJ & CTC

9 - Wow! This is a first rate box in my view. There are only tiny imperfections, color difference in rib #3 in the first row, also it is a touch smaller than others. But I have to really search for something to complain about here. This is a box I would love to reach into - well done!

8 - I would try to hide the showing bone ends.

9 awesome looking box. Looks moist and good use of glaze. I like the bark and placement. Makes me want to eat it now.

Score/reasons = 9/Nice color, just enough sauce on the top (almost too much), and well presented.

8. Good layout. nice arrangement. Look moist. However, the pieces are of differing widths.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
7/16/2014 02:40:12 am

Score = 9: Nice looking ribs,

Comments: The ribs look a little over sauced, but I think that is just because the glaze is so shiny. The rib on the front right is significantly larger than the other 3, but 9 means excellent, not perfect so I didn't mark down for that.

Bobby Whitefield
7/16/2014 03:12:15 am

Excellent color. Well balanced uniform pieces and presented nicely. A solid 9.

Score/Reasons: 8 - nicely presented box of ribs. I don't mind the sligthly uneven width of the slices, they are not manufactured pieces after all, but I DO mind the what appears to be thick heavy sauce.

Suggestions/Comments: Back off the sauce to a nice glaze for me. I want to taste the meat...that part, of course, would be part of the TASTE judging, though.

8 KCBS front row second from right has pulled back more than the others
Would trade it for a back row rib that matches better

Vern - MCBJ/KCBS
7/16/2014 07:35:37 am

8 - very close to a 9 but...The second rib from the right looks out of place, rib width not uniform. The bottom rack looks better...Good job getting close to perfect!

Score/Reasons = 8 A really great looking rib....nice color....nice glaze. Looks tasty.

Suggestions/Comments = The garnish looks like they just threw a bunch of parsley in the box. If using garnish, as much care and detail should be given to it as with the meat, or leave the garnish out.

8- The samples look really good, but the bottom right rib is sliced a bit larger than the rest, up front and very noticeable. Also went a little heavy on the sauce.

TIM MORNARD

Ribs look blotchy and unevenly cut. Nice level of color but overall uneven. 7

Sauce is in globs. Smoothing finish could improve score.

Nice shiney, yummy looking ribs. Varing non continues ribs in front ruin the look . If you can't make them look like from the same rack, hide them under ones that do.
Very good 8.

Score 8

Sauce is gloppy and uneven.

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
7/17/2014 03:43:53 am

Score/Reasons: 9; Meat looks very nicely cooked.

Comments/Suggestions: This is a very nice entry and in this case the meat is clearly visible through the sauce, but it is borderline toward the heavy side. Just be very careful of the level of sauce as there are some judges that will penalize for over-saucing.

Score/Reasons = 9, at first glance.

Suggestions/Comments = On more detailed examination the coloration could be more similar and a bit less sauce, but we don't get long to look before providing a score, therefore my 9.

Score/Reasons = 8, may be a 9 if the sauce was used as a condiment and not to smother the meat. I don't know why the meat has to me smothered with the sauce.

Suggestions/Comments = use less sauce.

Eric, CMBJ
7/17/2014 10:05:44 am

Score/Reasons = 9, Looks fresh and moist with just a glaze of sauce.

Suggestions/Comments = The dark chunks in the lower left side might cause a lower score from some judges. Do your best to cut each rib the same width - uniformity is important. Consider how much bone is exposed when determining which ribs go in each row.

Looks very good and care to presentation detail is obvious.

Jean

7 in appearance. Ribs are not symmetrical.
1. Some ribs are cut wider than the others.
2. Bottom of front row not even. Some ribs the meat is further back off of the bone that the others. Needs to be even.
3. Too much sauce.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
