BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 - Interesting display of ribs cascading from our left to right. Color is just a touch light, but finished well with sauce. These really do make me want to reach into the box and taste them.

7 - Spotty sauce, brush marks, and uneven cuts.

Score/Reasons: 9 - nice looking, inviting ribs. Great color, not over sauced. Not a fan of the arrangement, but it's legal.

Suggestions/Comments: Consider rethinking the layout. Sometimes, different is not necessarily better.

The reason why is because the turn in box looksmto me a little messy!

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Interesting display, brush marks are not appetizing. Brushed sauce on the edges do not mean it was glazed and set.
Can't help but notice the inconsistency in placement.
It only takes seconds to do it right...
I can see a above average 7.

8...Good bark. Nice color. Sauce brushed on leaving brush tracks. Ends not sauce.

I didn't judge down because of the arrangement but I don't care for it.

I really like the "fan" presentation. The ribs look moist and shiny. This is one good looking box

Score/Reasons = 9, nice color and I like the way the meat is arranged. Its eye catching the way the ribs are lined up, unlike most of the other presentation.

Suggestions/Comments = keep it up.

9 - Looks tasty. Nice glaze and color. Try to strive for uniform thickness/width. Great job overall!

Suggestions/Comments = interesting arrangement, but it works! Almost appears to be too much sauce.

8 Don't like arrangement but nice color and appear very meaty.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 9

Ribs are evenly sized and there isn't too much sauce. One point to consider on the placement is it could be construed as marking.

I am not a big fan of "painting" the side of the rib. Convince me I am wrong by letting me sample on of these. :)

I would rate this a 7. good color looks moist and inviting

8- Nice ribs, good color, uniform in size.

Comment: Good attempt at trying to present ribs in a different manner but it missed the mark. The placement of the ribs does not present a pleasing appearance.

8 in appearance. Pieces are even in size with smooth cuts. Can see front as well as side of ribs. Nice amount of sauce, no too much.

7- From a judges perspective, these ribs looked to be sliced unevenly, color looks to be off,and the lack of a bone showing on the end leads me to believe they are undercooked.

7. I don't like the presentation.

Suggestions/Comments: Place the ribs face up in the box.

Ok. So I'm a newbee. Is the fanned placement allowed? I really like it but...

other wise score 8. Great color and nice consistent sized ribs. Not too much sauce but I would like to see the meat. Brush marks in the sauce don't work for me.

Score/Reasons = 7 Nice color, but really can't see the whole rib. Like the thinking outside the box, but arrangement didn't really work.

Suggestions/Comments= Even out the garnish.

    EMAIL FIELD ON FORM:
You must be a "registered" BBQ Critic Online Judge in order to judge boxes on this site. Proof of registration is your email. All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
