BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score 8 very nice but little heavy on sauce and some smaller ribs mixed in.

Suggestion: Leave out the two smaller ribs. The other six would stand alone.

9 - Nice presentation, nice color altho it looks a little dark, may be the photo.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reasons: 9/Beautiful looking ribs! Makes me wish I was in front of them so I could taste them!

Comments: Be a little careful of the amount of sauce.

Score = 9

Comments: Ribs look a little dark, but that is probably the photo. Really nothing to criticize about this rib box.

Score/Reasons = 9 great care and attention to the cuts--nice even portions--looks like a good full box should.

Suggestions/Comments = i am generally not a fan of shiny glazing--portends to me that the meet will be sweetened. this one is good--not overly cloying looking. almost deducted a point, but scored a 9 first, and can't change the score once entered! ;]

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 9

Ribs are evenly sized, not too much sauce and look to be cooked perfect. Good job!

9 - Superior looking box. Color is a touch darker than I prefer, but the sheen is outstanding. The exposed bones indicate to me that the ribs are done right. Very nice entry

Score/Reasons = 9, looks moist and "shut the front door" good to me! NOT Perfect, but excellent.

Suggestions/Comments = Lighten up the photo!!!

9 - Great color, nice presentation!

Suggestion : Ever try Hollywood cuts...

Score = 8 (maybe 9 in person)

Could be the pic, but sauce looks "blotchy". Minor issue, there are several knife "hangers" (e.g. the top two left ribs on the right side) where the cuts were not as clean as they could be.

9-sauce may be a little heavy still looks good

8.....meat looks moist. Good color. Blotchy sauce. Over sauced.

Even up the front row of ribs long the bottom.

Enrico BBQness, CBJ KCBS

It's a high 8 but not 9 for 2 reasons:
I can see some tips
They are over sauced and the sauce looks really wet and not settled

Tony Schroeder

8 very nice looking box

Vern MCBJ kCBS

9 - Could have knocked it down for uniformity. The rib on the top right looks out of place...Otherwise, a great job!

9- Great looking ribs; evenly sliced, well proportioned and good color.

Perhaps a little too much sauce, it could cause a judge to deduct a point.

Looks like it's cooked well, nice cuts, a smidge saucey.nice pull back on dem bones.
Spend a little more time laying them out.
A very good 8, but not far from a above average 7.

    Purpose

    The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

    The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

    In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

    Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

    Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

    Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
