BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

I would rate this a 8. I would rather see more of the ribs. Not placing them on the sides

MIke Cannon
8/20/2014 04:21:34 am

8 - only < 9 because I like ribs w/o the edges showing.

Lorne Rae

9. Great layout. Nice arrangement. Look moist. Even color and sizes.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 7. I actually thought this was a box of hotdogs when I first looked. LOL! Too much sauce is blocking what the meat looks like.

I always find something good to say about each box, here it is...
nice full box of ribs.
However don't like the layout, don't like the deep brush marks all over everything.
I want to taste your pork ribs, not your gooey sauce, but that's not part of the appearence score is it?
Best I can offer is an average 6.

Score/Reasons: 9 - I like the layout. Ribs look great especially with a restrained application of sauce.

Suggestions/Comments: Consider laying at least a couple bones flat. Some judges will mark down for an edge-only presentation. Also, some judges will mark down for what appears to be brush strokes.

8 to much sauce
I wouldn't sauce the sides to begin with

I giv ethis one an 8. Just too much sauce on the meat. Would like to see the meat and not soo much sauce.

8- Nice. Appear moist and meaty, but a tad over sauced.

Erle Smith, KCBS CBJ & CTC
8/20/2014 06:32:33 am

6 - Okay entry, The sauce appears to be too thick, masking the look of the meat versus enhancing it. The fibers of the brush used have left lines that distract. It is also difficult to see what color the meat is.
The ribs appear very symmetric with the bones bones protruding enough to suggest the meat is cooked enough. The arrangement is attractive and the table captain will likely be thankful for a sample. Less sauce would have helped this entry score better by a point or more.

9 - Good presentation, symmetry, and nice color.

Note: Some will deduct for brush strokes. Lower right side looks to have a weed there...could be flat leaf, have to be there to see.

Vern - MCBJ KCBS

9 - nice uniformity. I'd like to sample that!

Score/Reasons = 8. I want to give it a 9 (maybe in person) but I can't see the meat for all the sauce. Beautiful box.

Suggestions/Comments = I'm not a fan of the brush marks but they appear to be a part of the look you were going for.

Pete KCBS

Score 7 - Looks like some well cooked ribs but I don't like the arrangement at all. I need to see the top of those babies, without standing on my head or asking the table captain to do the hokey pokey. A box full of sideways ribs is not a great choice.

GeorgeB
8/20/2014 10:30:14 am

Score/Reasons = 7, When the picture popped up, I didn't know what it was - strips of meat or ribs.
Suggestions/Comments = Suggest not saucing the sides of the ribs and turn some, perhaps the middle section, with the meat side of the bone up.

High 8. Looks good. Love the placement.
Just get rid of the brush marks, then you have a 9.

Enrico BBQness, CBJ KCBS

8 for me.
Ribs look definitively over sauced.
I can't see the color of the meat, the bark ..... Anything. All looks same color.
Ribs look well sliced and even.
For the future I will not put the other 2 ribs. 6 are enough.

Score 9
Nice looking box. I like the arrangement of the ribs. The sauce or glaze looks to be a bit thick, but that shouldn't take away from the presentation.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8, Can't see anything but the side of the rib and those look over sauced. Interesting presentation though

Richard Anderson

Sauce looks too thick/sticky. Too "red" - I like tomato based sauces but this look like more than typical amount for competition ribs.

Score/Reasons = 9, difficult to tell by this angle and photo, but looks dad-gum good to me. In person it could change!

Suggestions/Comments = layout is strange. would love to see more than just the sides of the ribs.

Score/Reasons = 8, I can't see a single rib except on it's side, so I can't gauge the consistency of the width which is important to me.

Suggestions/Comments = Change the layout. This doesn't work. Looks like a winner, but I can't get a view of it.

8....Heavy brush marks. Meat may be dry. Good color. Care was taken making the box. Nice arrangement.

Sauce is borderline to much. Dip the ribs in the sauce.

9 - I want to dig in. Ribs are framed by the garnish and each other. Great appearance.

Score/Reasons = 9, the box looks good. I like the rib arrangement. Gives the judges a different look.

Suggestions/Comments = Not much to suggest except maybe apply a little less sauce.

Score/Reasons = 6, All I see is sauce painted sides of ribs. Let's see that beautiful surface.

Gregg Swardson

7 Too much sauce! This would have made a much better
presentation without all the sauce on the sides of the ribs.
Nice layout of the ribs other than that.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
