BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

7 - Too much sauce, size and color not uniform.

RandyE

I would only give this an 8. It is just so random, doesn't help the apperance of the meat.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 8

Ribs are fairly even in size but possibly too much sauce.

Score 8
The ribs look like riblets, as they are so small.

Steve Rounds

Appearance-7 Nice shine, Not evenly cut, Ribs always look better if they are cut consecutively from a rack of ribs.

Score/Reasons = 8, sauce too heavy and not spread evenly. Layering ribs this small looks strange.

Suggestions/Comments = garnish is NOT appealing and doesn't help this box! (not a scoring factor)

9. Looks great and great pic!

Ed KCBS MCBJ
9/8/2014 03:28:17 am

Nice glaze, good cuts with a nice bite of meat on each side.
Little on the small size length wise but I still want to eat 'em.
I say excellent 9.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 7. These ribs appear to be overcooked and then were over sauced to cover the error.

Vern - KCBS MCBJ
9/8/2014 05:44:24 am

8 - Needs more uniformity. Close to a 9.

Bobby Whitefield
9/8/2014 05:49:53 am

Nice looking ribs but could be better arranged in the box. There are some uniformity issues also. A 7.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 7, Cuts and size are uneven and there is too much sauce. Color is nice though.

8 - Nice meaty cuts. Pretty well over sauced. They are going to be tricky to pickup.

I would rate this a 9. Would love to eat it now

Score >> 8

Smooth out sauce to a fine glaze.

Larry MCBJ

7 - Symmetry off, appears over sauced, and uneven cuts.,

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge

Score/Reasons: 8 - looks good but sauce is too thick & gloppy.

Suggestions/Comments: Make a glaze with the saucee rather than slathering it on. It's a meat contest, not a sauce contest...unless, of course, you want to hide a flawed product.

Tiffany - KCBS CBJ-CTC
9/9/2014 05:21:37 am

8 - the sauce looks heavy and gloppy as well as uneven.

I'd tighten up the ribs in the box - less space (or no space) between them is a better look.

Ronnie B CBJ/KCBS MBN

7-too much sauce 't see meat

william holladay (SCBA)
9/9/2014 12:52:23 pm

8 - Ribs are over-sauced and sliced unevenly, Still wouldn't turn them down.

5-6. Very sloppy box. Over sauced. Ribs nit uniformed in size. Need more meat in the box. Too much greenery showing

Score/Reasons = 7, Way too much sauce, not very appetizing to me. Also the ribs were not placed in the box carefully, they are not lined up evenly.

Suggestions/Comments = Use a lot less sauce. Use the sauce as a condiment and allow the meat to show through. With this much sauce, it appears something is being hidden.

Take time and line up all the ribs.

Strong 8 possible 9

Nice color and arrangement. Like the appearance of the double cut.

score / reason 7 looks a little saucy, uneven cuts and sizes, looks like they were just thrown in the box

7......Ribs have a good color and sheen. Looks over sauced. Uneven cuts.

Box looks empty

I can't see anything except the shining and over sauced bark. I'm judging for meat appearance but I can't.
I like the color of the sauce and the ribs shape even though they are not even.
A low 8 for me.

Achu

I'm not familiar with ribs that look like this, so let's assume they're legal.

Score/Reasons = 7. Look over-sauced and not taking advantage of the space in the box. The ribs look lonely.

Suggestions/Comments = with such small ribs, consider putting more ribs in the box. They seem to be swimming in a sea of green.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
