BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score 9
The ribs are fairly even, but some of the sauce is put on a little thick. Otherwise a nice looking box

Mike cannon

7 - ragged - move showing bone ends to the rear. Most are then covered.

I would rate this a 9. Looks wonderful!

Rocky/ CBJ
9/26/2014 03:38:12 am

8. Would like to have seen the sauce more even and shiny, but still a good entry. That long bone just looks out of place, but I wouldn't knock it for that.

Mary Linder

9
I like the size of the ribs. Decent amount of sauce and garnish, without being over done. Looks moist and delicious.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 9

Absolutely love the way these ribs look! Wish I could give them a try!

Vern - MCBJ KCBS

8 - Need uniform rib width. Could shine more...

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
9/26/2014 04:49:55 am

Score: 8; Looks pretty good, but presentation looks like the cook may have been rushed. If the cook had reversed the way the ribs are laid in the box, the score could be improved to a 9. The bones are what hits the eye first in this presentation - instead of the bones being the focal point, make the meat stand out. The ribs DO look nice and moist, thus the high score.

Suggestions/Comments: Even though we don't judge the garnish, this box is notable for the freshness of the parsley and the consistency of placement.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ CTC and Comp Cook

7. Nothing in the box that makes it pop. Need to try to get more uniform pieces and more uniform sauce.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
9/26/2014 04:58:10 am

Score/Reason: 8 - The meat looks to be drying out. I like the thin glaze of sauce...no thick gloppy sauce for me, please.

Suggestion/Comments: In general, I like the 4 bones down and 4 bones up "look." However, unless there's a compelling reason to point the bare bone-ends at the judge, I'd reverse the box OR at least position the bottom layer toward the box hinge and the upper layer toward the judge. Doing so will cover the lower layer of bone ends and leave only the upper layer of bone ends visible.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reason = 8/The ribs look like they've been sitting out a while and have drawn up! Other than that, they look fine.

8 - Take out the two center ribs on the bottom layer. Give them 6 ribs and this is a 9.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ, CTC

9 - Appear to well cut and cooked. Not overly sauced. Wish I was there.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
9/26/2014 11:03:44 am

Pretty nice looking ribs but the long guy on top would be better buried.
I think its a very good 8.

Larry MCBJ
9/26/2014 01:11:59 pm

8 - The two lower center ribs are ragged and bone on right side is hanging out.

Erle Smith, KCBS CBJ & CTC
9/26/2014 03:08:29 pm

8 - Very good entry. I like the color, looks like you've cooked these ribs well. There is quite a variation of size, would have scored a little better. Personally I like the meat receding from the bone. The sauce appears uneven though, more consistency would have scored a little higher too.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
9/26/2014 04:13:39 pm

Score = 9

Comments: Looks like little blobs of sauce on a couple of the ribs, but not enough for me to score it down.

Tom - CMJ/KCBS;CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS,NCBBQA
9/26/2014 04:22:25 pm

Score/Reasons = 8, looks a bit dry, uneven sizes, saucing and coloration

Suggestions/Comments = try to get all ribs in the top layer from the same rack so that they will look more similar

Doyle KCBS CMJ/CTC
9/26/2014 11:27:23 pm

8 - I like the look and the color. The pieces aren't uniform and too much of the bone is showing on some of the pieces.

score / reason 9 borderline 8 good color and shine, looks very appetizing

Wayne KCBS/CBJ
9/28/2014 03:08:48 pm

Score/Reason = 6. This is an average rib entry and I do like the color. The end rib on the right looks longer and throws off the arrangement of the top row, the inconsistent pull back on the bottom row and the slicing contribute to the score.

Jean CMJ
9/28/2014 03:27:32 pm

8 - rib bones not uniform. Sauce is not applied even. Over all it has a "messy" look.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
9/28/2014 11:58:01 pm

Score/Reasons = 7, the sauce in not applied evenly. This makes the ribs unappetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = Use less sauce and make sure, what you do use, is applied evenly.

7-cuts uneven bones coming out the side

9- Good color, nice shine and a well built box.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
9/30/2014 03:57:01 am

Score/Reasons = 9. Nice color, I want one.

Suggestions/Comments = Some judges are going to nick you on the imperfections on the bone pull back. Hide the outliers to not offend.

appearance-8- Nice looking rib box, trim all bones to look even, very appetizing looking rib box.

9 looks very appealing

10/3/2014 09:30:46 am

Score/Reasons = 7, Looks like it's drying up, blotchy sauce. Uneven bones sticking out from bottom row make the box look bad no matter what else you do.

Suggestions/Comments = Even things up. Don't use ribs like you have in the bottom row. Totally distracted me.

8 ribs aren't cut evenly and look over-sauced, still would love to dig in

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
