BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE such as garnish or smoke ring.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

I'd give it an 8.

a little dark but I(d go a 9...uniform look, nice box

Score = 1, in a KCBS sanctioned event, unless there's more than 4 ribs in the box...can't really tell for sure.

Otherwise the ribs look great.

Score/Reasons = 9, looks excellent.

Suggestions/Comments = Garnish is a work of art. A lot of care went into making this box.

9 nice box

Wayne KCBS / CBJ
4/29/2015 09:35:35 am

Score / Reason = 9. These ribs are presented well. The slices are uniform, I like the color and the sauce amount is adequate without being too heavy.

Comments: Too bad there are not 2 more in the box, I'll bet the Table Captain would love to have one.

9 - Nice color, not over sauced, and good symmetry. I want some!

Score/Comments: 9 - nice color, nice, prudent use of sauce.

Suggestions/Comments:. Box is legal but appears to need more meat. The balance between meat and open space seems unbalanced somehow; maybe broader slices.

Score/Reasons = 7. Ribs look great, but I can't see the interior of meat. Difficult to judge presentation on only front view.

Suggestions/Comments =looks good

9. Looks great!!

Score/Reasons= 9 meat has good color and looks inviting.
Initially, I would give you a 9 because I don't know if you have 2 more pieces under the 4 visible. Once it's determined there are only 4 pieces in the box, the 2 shorted judges will give you 1's in all criteria and the judges having samples will change the appearance score to 1.

Suggestions= It's probably best to have 6 visible pieces to avoid confusion.

4/30/2015 01:13:47 am

Score/Reasons = 8, they look a wee bit dry, but still very good

Suggestions/Comments = from this photo a judge can only see 4 ribs. There is probably another layer of ribs underneath, but cannot be seen from this angle. Still, this is NOT a DQ from a "judge's score". Only a REP can direct a judge to score a box a "1". Suggestion - "shingle" the layer of ribs so that the bottom layer can be seen.

Score = 9, Very nice looking ribs.

Comments: Color is a little uneven on the ribs in the front right, but not enough to bring the score down for me.

not too much sauce. The ribs are fairly even. Look good enough to eat

9 - Nice color, nice arrangement

Vern - KCBS MCBJ

8 - Try to fill out the box with another rib and glaze should be more uniform.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
4/30/2015 05:38:26 am

Score 9. This entry is difficult to judge as we cannot see the side of the ribs. Giving the benefit to the cook and only having a top view to judge from results in this score. Seeing the whole picture could change this score.

I would rate these a 9. They are cooked well and inviting

Score: 8

Meat crust looks a little dry; maybe a spritz or mop would help. Also lots of room left in the box. Otherwise, straight cuts; nice appearance.

9 great looking box! Even slices, good color and presentation.

Score/Reasons = 9, first off, I am assuming there are a total of at least six ribs if you are following KCBS rules. Otherwise, I like the look from above which shows there is not too much sauce.

Suggestions/Comments = good use of the sauce as a condiment. Just make sure the ribs are not over cooked and dry.

Pete KCBS

Score 8. Nice layout, nice cuts, ribs 2 and 3 in the front might not have been the best choice for the front due to the fat right in the middle.

Barry N

They are a 9 in appearance. I will have to assume there is two ribs hidden in the box. I seriously doubt you had a four judge table

william holladay (SCBA)

I hope there are more ribs in this box somewhere, but what I see is 4 bones. Calling the table captain.

Sharon CBJj/KCBS

score-9

The only thing I would suggest separate the ribs a bit if you are only using 4 as it appears to be unevenly cut the way you have it and some will mark your score down for that. The meat itself looks like a 9 to me.

Jean MCBJ

7 - only 4 recognizable pieces. Color nor size is consistent in all 4 pieces.

Any criticism would be nit picking.

Great color! Good cuts. Like the absence of gooey sauce. Only bad thought is the pieces look very thin (width).
I think it's an 8.5, so cooks score rounds up.
Excellent 9.

Appearance 7- Looks like a fat vein on the top set of ribs, make the ribs a little more uniform and pushed together.

Glenn - KCBS CBJ CTC
5/12/2015 05:38:22 am

1 - assuming there are only the four ribs in the box. (I cannot see any evidence of any ribs under the four). According to KCBS rules paragraph 16 - "If there is not enough meat for each judge to sample, the shorted judge(s) will score a one (1) on all criteria, and the judges having samples will change the appearance score to one (1).

beautiful ribs. look like they are slightly undercooked, but still would give it a 9.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
