BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE such as garnish or smoke ring.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Looks kinda dry, nice color, knife cuts just OK. Brush marks quite visible, maybe thin sauce a little.
I see a very good 8.

score/reason 8 good color, nice arrangement, looks like i can see brush marks in the sauce, two bones showing on the two ribs on the left takes away from uniformity, cut lines could be a little straighter

BBQ.TOM - CMJ
5/27/2015 02:25:39 am

Score/Reasons = 7, looks dry, uneven coloration, uneven slicing,

Suggestions/Comments = try to match up ribs together that have been cut apart (common edge) - not a judging point, but would make things look a lot better.

bruce nickels
5/27/2015 02:26:56 am

Score/Reasons = 6, meat looks dry. I cant see brush strokes from BBQ sauce

Suggestions/Comments = make better cuts/sharper knife. Add BBQ sauce then put back on smoker for 15-30 minutes to get a better glaze on ribs. Spray with apple juice

Score=9

Nice box. Can't see the rib meat in the picture only the bark (as with most Rib photos) might get a different score if seen in person

8 - Ribs have a nice color, but the presentation has gaps and the cuts are uneven.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
5/27/2015 03:07:57 am

Score/Reasons = 9, Good color, meat looks good.

Suggestions/Comments = Some judges will mark you down for the wavy cuts and the brush strokes. Work on the knife skills for better scores.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 9

Although the picture isn't quite clear these ribs look great. Sauce is close to the limit.

7 - nothing special = flat appearance.

I love these ribs. I would rate a 9. Good color and looks moist.

George

8 - Looks too dark.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
5/27/2015 04:00:26 am

Score = 8, Cuts aren't very straight. Can see brush marks in the sauce.

Comments: The main reason this box is an 8 and not a 9 is the cuts. The ribs look a little dark, but I think that is from the photo. Also can see brush marks in the sauce. Mist the ribs with some water, apple juice or what ever you like and it will give them a nice glossy shine. Fix those two issues and you will get 9's all day long.

7. Brush marks, looks like it needs a little more shine. Sauce looks thick and clumpy

Achu

Score/Reasons = 7, looks not so appetizing...

Suggestions/Comments = Brush marks are exaggerated and uneven. Looks dry, even with a lot of sauce on it.

Vern - KCBS MCBJ
5/27/2015 05:42:43 am

8 - Rib cuts need to be more uniform and brush marks in the glaze need to be eliminated. You're close to a 9...

Score/Reasons: 8 - Nice color, could use a little more "pop." Slices are a bit irregular. Photo is foggy so it's a bit difficult to say much more.

Suggestions/Comments: A quick spritz would have helped add the "pop." Please do your best to straighten out the curvy slices . . . even though they were adjacent, it was distracting.

8- Slight dry appearance, could be the photo.

8. Nice color, appreciate not over saucing, but look a tad dry. Otherwise appear not overdone but do worry might not be done enough based on pull back. Could go a 7 as a result.

nice color, personally my eyes are drawn to the brush strokes. 8

8 - Could be the picture but the rib color doesn't look that great. Cutting of the ribs could be more even.

Pete KCBS
5/29/2015 07:22:02 am

Score 7, has the appearance of being a bit overcooked. Better lighting and actual tasting may tell a different story but from the photo it's just above average but not excellent.

Wayne KCBS/CBJ
5/30/2015 03:15:35 am

Score/Reasons = 7 This above average entry might score higher in person... in the photo the color does not pop. Overall, the arrangement looks good, there is however inconsistency in the slicing. The sauce appears uneven and has obvious brush strokes.

8.......Nice color. No shine. Brush marks. meat looks dry.

Just improve on the above comments and the score goes up

Rick KCBS CBJ,CTC

Score/Reasons = 8. Box is nice and full. Nice color. Brush strokes are visible in the sauce. Rib size is fairly uniform but cuts appear jagged.

Suggestions/Comments = Focus on straight cuts and size uniformity. Overall, a very nice entry. Would love to try one!

8 - Could be the picture but the ribs look a little overdone & dry. Plenty of meat but the slicing looks a little uneven.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
