Was it DQ'ed on the basis of this rule?
9) Meat shall not be sculptured, branded or presented in a
way to make it identifiable. Rosettes of meat slices are not
allowed. Violations of this rule will be scored a one (1) on all
criteria by all six judges.

Could the placement of the ribs make it identifiable?? I don't think so...but I don't see anything else.

If those three in the upper left are stuck together, you'll only have five samples, but otherwise I'd give the box a "6" appearance score, because it doesn't appear that much care went into it.

1. CBJ/TC
2. 8
3. Greenery looks approved, no pooled sauce, no visible foreign objects. Is it possible that it was considered 'sculpted meat' with the bottom two ribs forming a lightning bolt/letter Z?

2) 8
3) looks great! Nice glaze!

I'd give this box a solid 8. Can't see why this would have been DQ'd unless there is foil somewhere...my eyes aren't that good to see it from the picture though.

Ill score it a 7 but probably was DQed for not having 6 bones in the box

I guess I will turn in my certification, because I don't see the DQ in this box. I wouldn't give it a real high score on appearance, maybe a 7 or 8, but please tell me the DQ reason. I use this to learn and practice and apparently I need it. . . :-(

KCBS CBJ
1st year.

I see two dots of sauce - one on left, one at top of box. I persoanlly would see this as the ribs made contact at those two points. So would not consider those as marks.
The laying of the ribs in a "patten" would be the only thing I could see they may have felt was inducating whose ribs they were. "Hey Joe, if you see a box with 5 ribs lined up and down with two laying offset crossways, it's my box".
But that could be any box turned in. Several boxes I have seen so far are laid out not in a row. And KCBS does not indicate how a team is ONLY supposed to place their ribs in a box. So laying them in this way I guess "could" be construed as an attempt to indicate whose box it was being judged.

Just my guess. Do I win anything?

Sully

I would score this box 7 or 8 they look like some tasty ribs would love to taste.
I looked closely I don't see the reason for
the DQ Please tell me what I am missing..

I give it a 6. Sloppy cuts, especially the front rib. Sauce in spots. The 2 front ribs should be together in my opinion. My only thought about the disqualificaation is that they construed the unusual layout as "Marking" somehow.

Kim
7/19/2011 10:27:13 am

It looks like a piece of foil on one of the ribs.

Bill Volpe
7/19/2011 11:18:01 am

I think the 2nd rib from the right has a piece of foil on it. Without that, 8.

Robert
7/19/2011 12:26:23 pm

CBJ, Rep and cook - score 8.

As to the DQ - something mentioned about foil on the 2nd rib from the right - I can't really tell if there is something physical there or just glare.

Could it be the 2 pieces of meat at the bottom don't contain a bone?

Ron
7/19/2011 01:00:14 pm

Score: 7 The box is a little sloppy, the ribs are cut poorly and uneven.

As far as a DQ, I don't see anything obvious. When I zoom in I see something black at the bottom end of the center rib in the group of 5. Maybe that was a foreign object. Otherwise, it is possible that the ribs weren't fully cooked. That wouldn't be visible in the picture. It is also possible that there wasn't 6 individual portions in the box, but it looks unlikely based on the picture. Maybe there are two or three ribs in the group that are stuck together?

Dave Compton
7/19/2011 01:32:28 pm

I'm wondering what that light green piece is just below the second rib from the right. Also, is there a bone in either of the bottom two pieces?
The two ribs (?) on the bottom are cut very roughly and the sauce appears somewhat uneven - these things count.
For the things that "don't count" but sure draw the eye: if you use garnish make it even, holes in the parsley draw the eye away from the meat; sauce spots also detract from the looks of the box as a whole.

Mike H./ Master Judge & Cook
7/19/2011 02:55:46 pm

Solid 8.

It could be an Illegal Box. (I don't recall seeing those ridges on the sides)

Or, it was late.

CoCook
7/19/2011 02:56:48 pm

My only guess would be the questionable item under the 2nd rib from the right...not sure what it is, but it doesn't look like parsley. Is it a foreign item or unallowed garnish?

If it was for pooling...well, it doesn't look like pooling to me.

Pat Santa Austin
7/19/2011 03:09:20 pm

CBJ - 2 contests to go for Master.
Based on appearance of the meat only, I would give this entry a score of at LEAST an 8. There is no pooling of sauce or foreign object in the box. The only reason I can think of for a DQ would be for the greenery in the box. Hard to tell from the pic, but there seem to be 2 types - one is curly leaf parsley, but I'm not sure about the other. Could it be kale?

Jean Dixon
7/19/2011 03:09:35 pm

I am a KCBS Certified Judge.

It has to be a major infraction to be DQ.

I see what looks like a small piece of foil in the upper right corner of the box under the rib.

rita~CBJ
7/19/2011 03:17:30 pm

Puzzled why this was DQed. Garnish is legal, dot on left was not "pooled sauce" or marked container, with 7 pieces, surely three or four of them aren't attached to each other and they don't look like 'rosettes', couldn't see any foreign objects, can't see cut side of rib, but would assume it is pork. I probably would have given it a 9 since it looks moist and tasty.

Liz
7/19/2011 06:20:11 pm

KCBS CBJ
6 Ribs not cleanly cut. Uneven sizes. Some sauce on box and garnish. No bones showing, possibly undercooked.

As to why the box may have been dq-
-turned in late
-possible foreign object in front of 4th rib
-turned box in upside down
-had an illegal garnish or substance under the parsley

Richard
7/19/2011 06:27:02 pm

KCBS CBJ
5 Doesn't look visually appealing with a jagged cut, too much sauce, doesn't look tender, sauce on garnish and box

Reason why it may be a DQ- 1.piece of something in front of the fourth rib could have been interpreted as marking.
2. Late? 3. Did they turn in ribs when it should have been chicken?

Bob KCBS CBJ
7/19/2011 11:37:05 pm

I would give this a 7 looking closely at the photo, it could be that the ribs are not separated completely (the top 5)

The small amount of sauce spots are a bit sloppy

If the reason for the DQ is in the pic, then I'm missing it. My guess would be wrong meat, or pooled sauce or tin foil or something under the meat?

Brent Hicks
7/20/2011 03:43:20 am

The problem started at the butcher.
Went in looking for some nice straight spares. I left the store with baby backs, not what I had practiced with.
That was the first of many bad choices.
End result. 43rd overall out of 43 teams. I'll share more after this is posted.
Thanks for letting me play!

mkevenson

There appears to be a piece of paper coming from the box on the right side. I assume the cook premade his garnish in a practice box and tipped it in the contest box on a piece of wax paper and left some of the paper. This would constitute a foreign object in the box and or marking the box.
Other than that the ribs look nice.

CBJ #23438

Scored it a 6 due to smudged sauce in a couple of places on the box. Also, a rib or 2 were not cleanly cut. Appears the bottom right rib was torn somewhat.

Only reason why it would have received a 1 in my books, is the team used both spares (St Louis cut) and babybacks. But that legal. However, I do not see a bone in the bottom 2 ribs (which appear to be the babybacks.

7 if not DQ'd

The ribs themselves look fairly nice...a little but much on the sauce and too ragged on the cut...but overall pretty nice. If I'm seeing this right, I think there is a little bird doo-doo on the 2nd rib from the right. Bummer.

Rob Dunham
7/20/2011 08:33:30 am

I am a CBJ. At first glance I would score it a 6. Though the ribs look good, there is sauce splattered inside the box making it look sloppy. One of the ribs was not cut clean and has little fingers. Also the greens are not neatly aranged with a few discolored.

When I really look, I see something that may appear to be a foreign object near the horizontal ribs which would cause the score to be a 1.

At least from the picture its difficult to find an obvious reason for a DQ. On first glance, the only thing I can stab at is perhaps the 7 individual/identifiable pieces do not have bones.

BBQ CRITIC

Looking at this box CLOSELY, you might think a little alien from another planet was hiding under the upper right rib eating away to his heart's content - and then a BBQ judge found him! Is that it? Disqualified by an alien object - or in KCBS terms - a foreign object?

Nope, that wasn't it.

Don't worry, Judy. No need to return your BBQ Judge Certification papers. In fact, your certification has done you well.
There is no DQ in the box itself. It was simply A LATE TURN IN. For the love of God, people - it was late!

Congratulations to Mike Hall and Elizabeth - you both got it it right!

Sometimes we judges just THINK too hard when judging BBQ competition boxes. How hard we sometimes search for the faults rather than diligently seek out what is good. If there is no OBVIOUS fault in a box, then why pick it apart like some foreign object from outer space?

Thanks for all your input. Some of you made some valid guesses. Nice job! Let's see if the cook has anything else to say about this. ;-)

So clarify something for me. As stated in the description -
The team that submitted this pic said they got a score of "1." As a judge, please post your own APPEARANCE score/comment and then look closely point out reasons why you think this box...

We were asked to comment on reasons we as judges would have given this a 1.

Which I think many people like myself tried to do.

But if a box is late we don't judge it and therefore would not have issued a "1" on our score sheets. Or am I missing something here? I have not ever been asked to write a "1" on a scoresheet because a team showed up late.

Ron
7/20/2011 04:01:36 pm

No fair Herb :-D You led us astray by telling us to "look closely" :)

Well played.

Big_AL
7/21/2011 04:29:33 am

I think most of us searched more tediously for DQ-able issues on this box because we were led to do so by the indication of the DQ. This is akin to a table captain announcing to all the judges at the table that a box is DQ'd...naturally we'd look at it a little closer to find out why. If we had any question at all about a possible DQ-able issue (like the possible issue with the 2nd rib from the right mentioned by multiple judges), we would have alerted the table captain who would have alerted an official to make the call.

Brent Hicks
7/21/2011 06:25:44 am

I confess it's my late turn in. Wow did I generate some comments! Thanks for all the comments real or imagined.
I think I would have been more satisfied if I'd not turned it in and taken it back to the team site to eat or sell as tastes of BBQ. I hope everyone learn from this. I got more enjoyment out of this site than I did reading the contest results.
Thanks Herb and all

BBQ Critic

Bill - I would be happy to clarify this for you. The cook told me when he was late getting to the tent, his box was DISQUALIFIED. Because it was late, each judge was required to score the box. To get a bit more detailed, here is how the KCBS scoring system played out: Appearance-0.5714 Taste-2.2858 Tenderness/Texture-1.1428. So that equals 4 points from each judge. Six judges equals 24, drop the lowest score and you have 20 points. The next score up in Ribs, from that box, was 118. Yes - the judges did score the box. For the record, I have never scored a late box either. Hope I never will. :-)

Big-AL - I'm not playing Table Captain here (never claimed that). I simply posted a tricky question that made you focus on a box and try to find an obvious DQ. The DQ was not there, yet a few other judges figured it out. So yes - I do understand your frustration of getting trapped my evil web of BBQ box deception. I do like your bird doo doo comment, though. ;-)

Ron - Guilty as charged! ;-)

Bubba - Glad you enjoyed the read.

I do appreciate the efforts of all BBQ Critic Online Judges who tried to tackle this box. If I had been on the other side and tried to judge this box myself, I probably would have drove myself nuts trying to figure this DQ out. Many of you came up with valid possibilities of a DQ, too. Some of you realized there was nothing wrong with the box (Dan, Brian, Sully, Ron, Rita and BenderQ) and still tried to guess. Then there is Judy - so close! You realized nothing was wrong. if only you had thought of a late box. :-(

Oh, and reading through the comments again - I missed that Richard guessed it was late too. So the judges that got this right are Mike Hall, Richard and Liz. You will all get a BBQ Critic....um, well when I have something made up I will send it to you. So please send me your mailing addresses. :-)

Thanks again for partaking in this wacky exercise of deception.

-- Herb

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
