Looks flat, uninteresting and dry. Sauce might help it's appearance. (Is there even any sauce on these ribs? Can't tell.) Try showing the cut side. Little more care in arranging too.

Nothing pops. Ribs look nice, but could probably use more sauce. Maybe it is just the photo.

Uneven placement of ribs, not glossy. Too many ribs, it hard enough to get 6 excellent ribs so too much chance for a bad rib when you do more. Greens, not judged but does show sloppy presentation. Rib bones sticking out of some and not others, another problem with too many ribs.

An 8. It is definitely sauced. Not over sauced, I like that. I also love more then 6 pieces. It gives the last 2 Judges a choice.

The presentation looks a bit sloppy. I'd need a photo IN FOCUS to score it any higher. A 'plus'is that it looks like these are from the center of two racks. Looks like plenty of room in the box, too. Is it just me- or is a brownish or 'cooked' color better than that transparent orange? (The way I get that cooked look is by turning up the heat at the very end of cooking and let the 'sauce' carmelize into BARK!!!

I'd like to see a little bark under the sauce. They look a little pale.

Bone end down, show the meaty part, not the bone. Garnish could use some work. Maybe parsley instead, or lettuce rosettes, or even both.

As a frequent table captain, I like to see more than six in a box, especially if they look yummy. Without seeing a cut side, it's difficult to be accurate, but I think this one deserves an

Ribs look unappealing at a quick glance, not making my mouth water. Box could be cleaned up a bit.

Overall: 8

Reasoning:

I like that the ribs are not oversauced. The presentation could have been better ( looks hurried ). Also, I like to see more than 6 ribs in a box if you can get them out of one rack.

Parts of the rib look good parts look dry. Placement in the box is uneven. If you choose to use garnish, even tho we don't judge garnish, make it uniform and a pleasant addition to the picture.

8 - Ribs look good, I don't need a lot of sauce, they look appetizing, my primary criteria. I like the use of lettuce, it's easier to get the ribs out without having to pick off parsley. I don't judge down for parsley but, I think it's a psychological thing.

The ribs certainly look dry (to me). The alignment of the ribs and their spacing looks off.

I agree about the protruding bones on some and not on others.

Could easily be an 8 if those issues were addressed.

They look like they were cooked in a kitchen oven. They look bland. No shine, no carmelization at all. Might just be the picture but they don't look like I'd want to just grab one and eat it. Not appealing looking.

Nothing special. Really just plain. Bit better than a 6 though.

No bark visible. Sauce looks faded...almost as if evaporated. Looks good but not great.

Going against the rest, my first impression was beautiful, I can't wait to try these ribs. Yes, they could have a bit more shine, or glaze maybe, but I can see the ribs, the meat, the grain. And it's well presented.

You must be a "registered" BBQ Critic Online Judge in order to judge boxes on this site. Proof of registration is your email. All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
