I am a CBJ - i would give it an 8 - i am not sure why the two bones on the right are turned upside down. I find that very distracting. I think it would look awesome - easy 9 if those two bones were flipped.

Hard to tell from the pic. If I saw it in person it may be a 9 or a 7.

Just doesn't appeal to me. Better than average, but no "WOW" factor (Sorry Darrell).

Really not very appetizing. Overcrowded. I do like the color but they look dry.

OK, to begin with, this is not a bad looking box of ribs. Overall there does not appear to be an overabundance of sauce, but actually the "tell" for that will be in the taste of the sauce itself. We wouldn't want it to be overpowering. I am not so sure that the display ribs are that dry, I would rather they appear as they are displayed and not covered in apple juice which would take away a point. The ribs appear to have a sufficient meat content to be well worth the money. No Scrawny ribs here.Bed and box appear clean, no obvious overuse of herbs and or spices. The only suggestion I have is that if your turn in is early or for any reason you think the ribs might appear dry, don't over juice and maybe even remove the 2 up front. But if the rib is exceptionally meaty and moist, most certainly show off the cut side.

I'd give it an 7. Overall it looks appealing but the 2 ribs on the right that appear to be from a different rack give it an unbalanced look.

CBJ: yes
Score: 7
Reason: Not Centered (back row), multiple racks (and it shows). Visually, not appealing.

Can't really tell from the photo.

I don't care for the two bones placed in front though.

I would have to see a better pic to judge this, but i would say at least seven form what I can see.

Sauce is a bit uneven and sloppy. Top of the ribs show dark / light spots. Meat seems to be pulled up on a few pieces (over cooked). Not a horrible box, but definitely needs some work.

I give it a 7

Solid 8. Uneven saucing/coloration take away from the appeal a bit.

Score = First glance I gave this box a 7.
Reasons = Ribs don't look "uniform", the cut side looks dry, and the sauce doesn't appear to be spread evenly over all the ribs.
Suggestions = Try to get at least six ribs from one rack rather than using two from a different rack. Spread the sauce more evenly.

I was leaning 6, but always give benefit of doubt to the cook. It's hard to tell in this photo; better light could go up or down on score... There appears to be burned or overly-dark sections. The one bottom rib looks DRY giving the whole image a dry appearance (even though I appreciate a memphis rib). While we dont factor greenery in, there's a jungle thing going on here that's a little distracting.

Score 9. These ribs have excellent color and nice sauce. I like the box layout as it allows me to actually see the meat without the table captain turning the box. I believe the two top ribs we not "turned upside down" I believe they may have been cut from a seperate rack. A cook might do this to have ribs that are more balanced and I don't think they would expect judges to score down because the ribs don't match.I was taught to judge the food on how appealling it looks and is this a meat you can say "I really want to try this meat" and to that I can say YES. I think some of the judges are being overly critical and should rethink the scores. Also judges need to remember you are judging appearence only. If the ribs are indeed dry you will score that in taste.

KCBS.. just not feeling it. to much going on here with the placement and the stripes. cant tell if that is raised meat or sauce that got to brown, the front side just looks a touch dry.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
