7-Most of these ribs look really good, but I would possibly be disappointed if I was the judge stuck with the little runt rib on the end. I'm not usually a stickler for uniformity and showing ribs all from the same rack like most judges, but this one sort of crosses the line. Try to pick ribs for the box that are at least close in size.

7, the color of all of the pieces just doesn't say "EAT ME!". A few of them do, but as a judge I hope my table captain starts with me and I get to pick the second from the left portion! The far right rib is also much smaller and doesn't fit the big picture.

Obviously from up to 3 different racks, and I'm pretty sure judge #6 is gonna get that 3rd rib from the right... or the right most one... and they don't compare to the rest. I see 4 good looking ribs here

Ribs from 2 different racks are ok as long as they are the same size and color. Your'es are not. Rib on far right is burnt. # ribs on right are shorter than on left. More consistent ribs would improve your score

7 - uneven sauce and uneven lengths detract from what are probably great tasting ribs. The box design looks cramped with no garnish visible on either side. Perhaps if four ribs were placed vertically with just a bit of space between them; then the other ribs placed horizontally across the front with one rib on edge to show the meat, you might be able to make it look less cramped and make the garnish visible all around the outside.

7 rows uneven and splotchy coloration lot of white showing perhaps garnish sides. Or put in more ribs to look more full.

hmmm.. I dont like this look.
a 7 which is very low for me to give out.
because it looks like ribs from 3 racks and different looks to all 3. would have been better stacked up on top of each other.

I'd give it an 8. Presentation layout could be better and include all same size ribs.

Three ribs on left would rate a 9, but three on right detract. Better presentation would have been to stack three on left on top of three on right to hide the difference on size.

This one gets a 7.

Uneven pieces, sauce is uneven and looks like it's covering some charring.

Of course the cook knows he's had to go with ribs that aren't close to the same size, and one is particularly small. To me, that's all that keeps the appetizing nature off of a 9. Otherwise, really nice color. I like the shine level; not overly fake. The ribs have pulled back nicely from the bones, beautiful color on them.

6 Although the 3 on the left look great, the 3 on the right drag this score down

I'm giving the benefit of the doubt due to the low quality photo.
The meat looks a little dark and the garnish a bit meager.

bone tips down will almost always score better than up

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
