Just because the sauce is uneven and I don't get a side view which could make this a 9.

7--Looks Ok but really nothing special, lacks that wow factor.

Ignoring the garnish, if the lone rib was stationed on top this would have a stronger presentation. This meat looks appetizing.

nice looking ribs, a litle dark, a bit too much sauce for my liking, more attention to detail with the garnish...7

Little too much sauce for me.

Nice color, basically nice lookin' ribs. Probably a little too saucy for my preference, but I like that they're not artificially made to shine. The arrangement is a little hap-hazard with the rib on the right "falling". Get it a little more level with the others, perhaps a little less sauce and these are 9's.

I'd give it a 7. Layout and presentation could have been done better.

I don't usually score below 6. In fact, I don't do it at all unless it is obvious that little or no effort was put into the box.

this has parsley just kinfa thrown in and the ribs aren't really even arranged at all.

Even though the ribs don't look very good, I would have scored a 6 if it looked like someone had put effort into the box.

the ribs look overcooked and the sauce looks thick and blotchy.

to improve, learn how to use garnish well or don't use any at all. I don't know what to tell you about how to produce a better looking rib. Perhaps take a class or something.

Looks pretty good and appetizing, but not quite excellent. Looks a bit gritty and even though this is supposed to be a "Meat" contest, the sparse and poor looking garnish definitely doesn't help make the meat look any more appetizing.

Score 6. I would believe this box was submitted by a newer team. The meat looks dark, dry, and overcooked. The garnish is of mixed color and poorly placed to enhance the meat. Not a good looking box.

Nothing wrong here. Meaty and I would say the maximum sauce you can get away with. It just looks thick and gooey and opaque not the clear glossy sugar glaze look. I like the way the ribs for a ripple wave.
Very meaty. those are some big ribs.

Uneven/Goopey sauce and some burnt meat on the bottom rib.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
