Love this box!! But, I expect to see some lower than 9 scores simply because the layout is just a little different. In my eyes, this is top notch.

In person I would like to see the sides of these because they look great. But I do not put up with brush strokes in the sauce. Get rid of the brush strokes and it's perfect. 8

ribs 1,2 &4 are having trim problems.I can't say I have ever seen a rib with the bone pull back in the middle. I would suggest not using that rib. The meat looks appetizing and good to eat but the trim needs work. Try to make the sides straight an parallel to each other.

6-7. The one rib with the white bone sticking out on top is distracting. Brush strokes in the glaze are evident, need to eliminate that. Too much parsley stuck in around the back and right side at the last minute and parsley stems sticking up on the left side - this doesn't enhance the meat, it distracts from it and looks sloppy. Some of the ribs aren't consistently cut thickness, cut thicker at one end and thinner at the other (bottom right rib for example). Tighten it up, too much space between the ribs.

My eye went right to the only bone not covered in sauce. IMHO, they should all be covered or not covered.
Brush marks are visible in the sauce.
Otherwise a good looking turn-in.

Gloppy sauce with heavy brush marks won't score well.

I don't care for the presentation I think it is nice in theory, but it just doesn't present well in my opinion. Ir all ribs were exactly the same size and shape, it might work, but as is, it looks helter skelter.

The garnish looks sparse as well

I really wanted to give this an 8, but it's just not there.

Generally a pretty good color on these. The brush marks take away from the appetizing nature of them. Sauce is a little gloppy.

Looks pretty good, but not quite excellent. Sauce is not evenly spread and coloration is mixed on some ribs. Bare bone on 1 rib looks detracting from the rest. I'd definitely look forward to tasting these ribs!

that picture might be to good.
it shows the brush strokes.. I think that alternating rib layout is confusing for the mouth and tummy.

I would give a 7. Sauce is clumpy and uneven, The pattern of the ribs makes it hard to see. Nice full box.

Score 7. Reversing the ribs in the box? Also "painting" sauce on the ribs make them less appealling to me. The cut, the color, the placement, and sauce hurts this box.

6 maybe 7
If I could see the sides of these I could possibly raise score. Sauce is uneven and brush marks obvious.
This couldn't get DQ'd for the placement pattern could it?? It's certainly unique.

Plenty in the box. Wish I could see the side of 'em. If they looked good from that view, could be an 8

Box needs a LOT of work I give it a 6

Wow not sure how much info I can leave, but this box is probably one of the worse boxes i've seen on BBQ critic. sauce is un even, ribs have a horrible cut, you can see the bone on the 2nd rib from the bottom.

I would suggest signing up for BBQ critic saving the photos from some of the top rated boxes and print it out really big and put it on the wall as a goal.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
