These look like they would taste great but for competition appearance they are a 6 because they are not all the same size. It looks like they came from the same slab and since the slab tapers the rib sizes are not uniform nor is the sauce application.

5--while they may be tasty--presentation is haphazard at best

I don't like to give 5s, but this is well below average IMHO.

Color and sauce are bad (dark and gloppy), There seems to be no effort put into arranging or even selecting ribs. Garnish is just haphazardly placed in the box.

I hate to frustrate the cook, but I can't even begin to offer helpful advice as this box needs so much work. The best advice I can give is to sign up here to view and judge other boxes and see what others are turning in.

Not a lot of effort put into this box. Ribs haven't been trimmed. Meat looks dry. I don't want to dive into the box and dig in.

at first glance, the product looks irregular, hastily slapped into the box, and presented without much sttention to detail. On closer inspection it looks dried out and lacking moisture. Garnish is nice, but the asymetry is distracting .....6

These ribs are from the same first time competitor who's chicken and great brisket have been up here previously.
I didn't get to judge 'em and didn't get any leftovers but this box came in 16th or 17th out of 37 teams at Nelsonville. His dad was eating the last leftover rib when I got out of the judging building and it looked darned good to me.

5-6. Rib lengths uneven, do a better job of trimming the ribs pre-cook. Sauce unevenly applied. Color is too dark.

borderline below average and average but I'll score it a 5. They look overcooked to the point of being dry and a little burnt on some pieces.

lack of symetry and attention to detail lowers the score on this box for me.

6 - Sloppy appearance, poorly sauced, and doesn't really make me want one.

Looks dry and overcooked.

6 - Does not look that appetizing. Color is way too dark.

I would give this box a 4.

I like full boxes that emphasize the meat as opposed to the garnish, so nice job there!

Unfortunately, the ribs appear overcooked, irregular, not centered and not very appealing.

Lacks that "wow" for a 9, and lacks enough to get an 8 from me too. Looks okay, but not all that appetizing to me.

I give the box a 6.

The ribs are not cut well, not simular in size. The sauce looks burnt and discolored. In all honesty I've seen better boxes from the teen division and almost think this is some type of joke.

The only advice I could give would be to stop competing and start judging so you can see what competition BBQ should look like.

Dark; REALLY dark. Looks to be burned in a few places. Appears to be VERY dry. Also appears as though sauce is glopped on then burned in, unevenly.

To me this is just not appetizing whatsoever.

Benefit of doubt as to whether the uneven appearance is from ribs or sauce. IF I could determine it was from the sauce, the score would suffer. The garnish nicely frames the meat. For me to improve the score there are two items: 1) try getting the bones to lie evenly (re. the second and fifth bones stick up) 2) the edge on the front bone looks dry -- try spraying the edge of the meat to help with the dried out appearance.

cbj & team cook,6 or 7,i really like to more of an even leangth on the ribs, and they look a little charred in places, sauce looks like it was'nt put on evenly.I wonder if they were in a hurry?kinda like turn in time snuck up on them.

I prefer to see even length bones, either STL cut or BB's. Top of meat looks odd...almost wrinkled...and a little too dark. Side of meat looks dry. Not the most appetizing.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
