6-7. What's with all the pink tint with some of these entries? If its a bad picture, how are we supposed to judge it? What I don't like about it besides the pink tint - sauce looks a little heavy, ribs are tucked down in the garnish, the garnish is stuffed in at the top and bottom and does not enhance the appearance of the meat, and the 2 ribs laying on their sides are clearly different sizes.

No score. These could be anywhere from a six to a 9. There is just no way to tell from this horrible picture. When judging appearance, I really like getting a decent side view but this picture sucks. If I could tell these are dry and overcooked this is a 6 or 7. If juicy and not overcooked probably a 9. I don't mind the dark appearance on some of these. I like a little char on ribs when done right. There might be a little too much sauce but again, can't really tell.

Bad color balance...heavy sauce, garnish distracts...7

Dean - Here you mention "garnish" distracts. I am assuming you are not judging the garnish, but simply indicating the garnish distracts by covering parts of the meat which makes it difficult to judge the meat.

Valid point. Just want to clarify that for the cook. ;-)

7

Sauce looks to be too think in areas. Also the 2 outside pieces turned up are not uniformed. They look to be off of 2 different racks. Fix those 2 issues and I will most likely give it a 9.

Obviously the picture is poor - but taking that into account the meat looks on the dry side

seven---just above average

RIbs look overly sauced and the lighting form the camera makes the side of the ribs appear dry.

Score 8. Not a good picture, but I do like the layout of the ribs. The only reason this is not a nine is the ribs are OVERSAUCED. Once again this is a meat contest and I want to see the meat not miscooked meat covered with sauce to hide any mistakes

KCBS
picture is horrible.
I like the box layout . Thick sauce and my guess of its color is ok
THe sides look real dry ?
I would give it a 9 if the pic was good and the sides looked moist.
if dry a 7 at best.

The ribs look wonderful. Good color, even cuts, sauce evenly applied. I recommend that you straighten the parsley across the top so it has a nice even line. If this was judged without parsley I would give it a 9, however the parsley drops it to an 8.

Fred - We do not judge garnish (parsley) in competition. However, if you are referring to the parsley being a distraction by covering the meat, then you have a valid point. :-)

I would give this an 8. Sauce is a bit heavy. The color of the box and background is pink so I would think the color of the entry is affected also. A better picture of the same box could well be a 9.

8 or 9

Really hard to judge due to the picture hue, but what I can see looks phenomenal. I want to take a bite.

8- Very Good is what it is.

9 - That's a great smoke ring. I hope the sauce doesn't overpower the meat.

BBQ Critic

Larry - we do not judge the "smoke ring" in a KCBS BBQ competition as it can be artificially produced. ;-)

Soft 8
Garnish on sides do not match front and back.
Not a fan of rib on their side placement.
Color is good (I know its over red from photo
Nice job of cutting.

Modelmaker - we do not judge garnish in a KCBS competition. ;-)

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
